I just purchased NASLite+ and I'm delighted with how easy it was to install and get up and running. It's installed on a Dell XPS m200S (circa 1997) with a 200 MHz Pentium CPU and 64M of RAM. I'm using a 120G and a 200G WD drive for storage.

Given this configuration, is there any benefit to installing a new IDE controller, and if so, can anyone recommend one? I don't want to waste money on a controller if it won't give me any noticeable benefits, but if a cheap PCI card can make a difference I'd want to try it.

Thanks!

Jeff Garbers

I threw a promise Ultra100 TX2 PCI card in an older NAS (500MHz, 128MB RAM, Gbit NIC) and did get some improvement but much. Diskwriggler now gives me Read/Write of about 10MB/S. I had 6-7MB/S using the onboard ATA33 controller. People with newer mother boards seem to be getting much better transfer rates.

I just tried DiskWriggler and I'm getting about 8.6MB/s write and 7.7MB/s read (which is a little odd; I'd think writes would be slower). So it doesn't sound like the upgraded controller would be much of an advantage. This system is primarily used for nighttime backups, anyway.
