Are you interested in a NASLite-2 based DAAP/MDNS iTunes server?

I'd be very (very!) interested in iTunes server functionality. Any update on whether this is in the works?

I have followed this discussion for sometime hoping to hear that NASlite was adding a music server to their software. Like a number of you I suppose, I've looked at FreeNAS but I really liked what I've seen of NASLite, BUT this business of running two machines, one with the music server, the other the NASlite server is too wasteful.

Is there any hope or should I slink away quietly?

We do have a prototype iTunes server running on a NASLite-2 derivative and are pretty happy with the result. We are currently working on a UPnP component for that implementation. We are finding out that UPnP is extremely resource-hungry and tends to develop some bad habits when running within the confines of NASLite. Working those details out has proven somewhat time consuming.

So, absolutely there is hope. It's just taking longer than we thought. ;-)

No point in asking about a timeframe I suppose, but one important question - if I buy and install NASlite-2 now, will this new software be an addon, i.e., I won't have to reinstall or loss my existing data?

And my thanks for giving us a "clue" as to what coming...

Oh I really hope it is the Firefly iTunes, that would make my life sooo much easier.

If it can run with 25k songs on Linksys NSLU2 then it will definitely run on my NASLite hardware

Love to hear when this is fully functional (same sort of time frame would be nice  )
I have it sort of running now. Now I can play/add/edit songs at the server. But where I really bought v2.0.6 for does NOT work..
Namely, be able to play songs from different client computers at the same time. (and rate them etc.)
I hope there is still some work in progress. Let us know.
Thanks.

Will your UPNP server work with the PS3?

I have a windows box as an intermediary right now. It would be great if I could take it our of the chain. NASLite->WindowsBox->PS3->PSP is functional but awkward. I'd love to push the UPNP/DLNA stuff back onto the NAS.

I know it's slightly off-topic, but how about Slimserver (or Squeezecenter 7 as it's called now)? A lot of the NAS boxes out there (Qnap, Synology) can run this open source media server on the Linux distro inside the box.

I sincerely hope that you'll find a way to create a generic server. I do not want to use iTunes, nor do I have an iPod (well, I have that little white usb stick, but never use it since it only plays MP3's) Like I said in an earlier post -I think- I use MediaMonkey as a superb player and library organizer.

But maybe you can be more explicit, and take away my worries. I could not find any comprehensible information on DAAP/MDNS.
By the way: the link in you provided in the first post: http://www.serverelements.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=150 is a 404 Not Found

Very intrested if it will be able to run FLAC to a Squeezebox, as far as I am aware there is a Linux Slimserver, but how one would intergrate it into NASLite I have not got a clue. Very intreseted if it can be intergrated though :D

Yep count me in also.

Currently I have my iTunes DB and Songs are on my NAS and everyone on my network can import songs/album to there local PC or access my Library file. But only thru a PC none to install in my Home Theater. Perhaps with an Apple TV/mini this could come to fruition!?

This would be REALLY sweet since I currently use NASLite-2 HDD for this exact functionality...

Questions (if not already asked)
-What version of DAAP would you be using as it has changed in the itunes 7.x line using custom headers that things like XBMC cant read.
-How would it integrate with itunes or would it simply be a media geared storage/serving solution
-How would it differ from NL-2 HDD?

Any progress is good in my mind but I'd honestly love to see some forward motion on user level permissions before I'd commit to another product/license...

Make it a real hit.

Combine the capabilities of DLNA ( like twonky media server) Daap (like itunes) and slimserver and you will have a real hit.
That way it would serve almost all clients,windows,linux/unix,mac and almost all network capable AV devices.

I thought Tversity would lean that way but they stayed with a java based system that is a bit of a resource hog and requires a moderately fast machine.

I think that if you stay away from the recoding for playback thing and just serve up the content as is you could keep it light.

I don't think it would be necessary to serve up internet radio as most clients do that well already. IPTV is,of course, another issue.
