Statistically, the likely point of failure is always a drive rather than the hardware RAID card. That prediction is also supported by field data. 8)

I agree, but I don't have to worry about a failing card or loosing the array and it does happen. all my eggs are in different baskets so to speak.

Also note this refers to the next version of naslite v2.03 using the mirror disk option. using Rsync as the transport method

Disk mirroring... fantastic.

As for RAID card costs for every good eBay story theres probably several times that many that are bad i.e. outbid, wrong country etc etc

Lets not forget were talking about a second hand card controlling your expensive drives and data. You also got to be able to get another one in a timely matter otherwise an outage of a couple of days could become a couple of months tracking down another one.

Keep in mind your 5 year old ATA RAID card is not likely able to be purchased retail for any amount of money no matter what your emergency is.

Another factor is NASLite. All of a sudden hundreds/thousands? of people who never thought about RAID before are scouring eBay looking for that bargain card.

Im not being intentionally negative and if your using older IDE drives rather than SATA your in a MUCH better boat but if your a SATA chap the two most poipular cards on ebay are Adaptec 2x10 and 3ware 95xx and both of them are not usable in NasLite (ok the Adaptec one works but lots of horror stories all over the place)
