I would be more interested in the other end of the chain..
A media (audio at least) player booting from CD or USB to utilise one of those millions of old laptops desitined for landfill.

Yes I'd be very interested and I'd be willing to pay for it.

I don't use iTunes and don't really want to. I do use Winamp and have done since day one. I also use Musicmatch (I was a beta tester for them).
If you are thinking of adding multimedia capabilities why not make it compatible with some of the media streamers. Such as Pinnacle's Showcenter, ADS Media Link, Buffalo LinkTheater, Elgato Eyehome, H&B DNX 8620, IO-Data Linkplayer and Linkplayer2, Lite-On 2010, Momistu V880N, Netgear EVA700, Neuston Virtuoso MC-500, Snazio 1300, 1310 and 1350, Zensonic Z400. All these use virtually the same chip sets.
I'm thinking of something along the lines of the Swisscenter software http://www.swisscenter.co.uk. And I do know that some people have hacked their NAS so it can run standalone, so you don't need a PC running all the time. But to have it as an inbuilt option in the NasLite software would be amazing.
I love my NASLite server and it also impresses my clients when I say I put it together myself. I install Home Automation, Structured wiring and Whole house audio systems.

Toscal

You may want to look at the Linksys NSLU2 as a small footprint server for all the devices you mention. I am putting WizD on it (an alternative to SwissCenter).

The basic advantage of this is that runs on a linux server that is 1"x3"x4" and uses 10w when running and costs less than $100.

I am pretty sure they have got SwissCenter running on it too.

SwissCenter holds alot of promise. I have never been able to get SwissCenter to run properly eventhough I have tried an several boxes, XP and Linux both with fresh OS installs. It starts out with a promise then dies miserably every time :-(

I have tried several solutions with mixed results. My goal is to be able to stream multiple audio (WMA, OGG, etc) and video (Xvid, Divx) files to media devices (Roku, Buffalo) and PCs.

definitely yes
that is what I'm looking for as a nas application.
I already thought about installing another operating system on my current Naslite server to provide media streaming possibilities. If you are going to develop a system I would appreciate it because naslite is really a good and stable product

I just hate itunes. My music library is used by MS Mediaplayer for ripping (perfect lossless wma) and MediaMonkey -a superb player.

Streaming from NASLite to more than one computer, while ripping to the NASLite box: no problem, very impressed.

So no need for a update/upgrade in that sense.

When it comes to wishlists, I would LOVE to have extended ACPI possibilities (fan control, stand-by) and password enabled FTP.
