I hope you will excuse me taking the debate down a notch, but as the problem concerns me closely these days (I am moving data between disks of my NAS box), I thought I'd interject:

I wasn't aware there was another way to copy files from disk to disk than going through the lan... What is this "Shares Share" thing? Is it specific to one protocol and how would one use it? (I wasn't aware NASLite recoursed to Shares, I thought this was reserved to more complex NAS operating systems)

I always connect to the NAS via NFS to read, or write small files (old habit from my first NAS box running version 1), or FTP to write large files, from a Mac. And although the NAS box now broadcast its presence on the lan via AFP, I have found that streaming video via AFP is erratic compared to NFS, so I've stuck with NFS.

I am particularely imterested in speeding up copy of files since all the files I have to copy are under 4GB.

Thanks a lot

If you map a drive to "\\<insert NAS name here\Shares" then you will "see" all of the drives rendered as folders in the root of this pseudo drive.

If you move files between these folders (which physically moves them between drives) then it will all be done server side and the data does not need to come down to the client and go back up to the server.

Windows will timeout after a while which is why there is a (variable) upper size limit (which is not easy to determine) before timeout occurs during a move between shares.

Thanks for your reply.

I just realised I was using the wrong command to connect to my nas via SMB, so for beginners like me:

smb://<NAS IP>/Shares

I simply forgot to add "Shares"
