It is irrelevant if the drive is source or mirror, it still contains a mounted filesystem. When the filesystem is mounted as RW, it will be marked as unclean until properly unmounted.

And so are you confirming, that,
A] in the case of EXT2 (no journal) the "unclean" flag serves this purpose;
and
B] in the case of EXT3 (disk with journal) it is the "needs_recovery" flag that serves that purpose ?

AND ... I guess ...
C] A mirror operation does not alter the filesystem type (making the destination match the source) ... it only copies the contents.

AND ??

D] A mirror operation IN-cludes or EX-cludes copying of the lost+found folder ...
