Heh, I bought NASLite-2 due to it supporting "FTP access" but quickly realized after purchasing, its completely open, with no security. This is my fault, but I still would like to achieve this. I really like NASLite's stability and speed, all I really need is secure FTP support.

Is there anyway for me to enable this? Is there a router setting that I could implement? A specific hardware router (cheap would be nice). Some software tools?

If there is no way to do this with NASLite-2, could anyone point me in another direction? I dont know Linux at all, so a complete package similar to NASLite would be preferred.

I would like to stick with NASLite though, not just because I paid for it, but because I really do like the interface, the stability, and the speed. All I need is secure FTP access.

Any help on this issue will be MUCH appreciated.

P.S. Tony or Ralph, any chance we could see this as a feature in an upcoming release?

Thanks,
Kev

If/when server elements ever gets around to offering a RAID server with assigned shares, I too hope they will make secure remote access available.

We're presently running a Rebyte, which does support webdav...but I'd sure like to see something of superior quality available from server elements.

If you have time to fight the open source integration battle, here is another option: http://www.openfiler.com/

Never tried it....

One option could be to use VPN. I have a NASLite box on my home network behind a Linksys WRT54G router with a firmware upgrade that provides a VPN server in the router. Using the standard PPTP VPN client in Windows I can access my NASLite box from my laptop via any internet connection. I'd have to admit that the Linksys router really isn't up to handling the full speed of my cable internet connection but it manages about 200-300 kbs each way which is adequate for retrieving that document you forgot to bring with you! If you wanted something capable of handling a bit more speed then perhaps you'd need a router designed to have a built in VPN server or a separate VPN concentrator. But for my needs the free firmware upgrade to a router that I already had has proved to be sufficient.

Thanks guys. I might go the WRT54G route.

Tony or Ralph, and chance for some secure FTP/http access?

If you do opt for the WRT54G option, just be aware that not all versions can be flashed to provide a VPN server. I use the dd-wrt firmware on a V.2 router and it works fine. I'm not claiming that it's the best - just that it works. But you can find more about which routers dd-wrt works on at http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Supported_Devices

For sure there are other options out there but given that I already had the hardware, this was the easy option. And in any event I reckon that the VPN route is far better than trying to get a secure ftp of http server on your NAS box if what you need is secure access to your files/data/photos when on the road or to be able to do an incremental backup from afar. YMMV!
