OK, I have my Naslite 2 box set up & running, so far so good. Whereas before I couldn't stream video files from my downstairs PC to my wireless laptop upstairs, I can do from NL2+ very easily - good work fellas!

However. I'm just about to install an XBMC-modded xBox as a media center by the family TV downstairs and I want to be able to restrict access to certain folders (nothing really dodgy, just don't want my two young daughters watching "Evil Dead 2" or "Saving Private Ryan"!)

Am I to understand that there is no way of configuring this on NL2? This seems to be, if you don't mind me saying so, a bit of a stunning and startling omission on what is otherwise a fine product... I don't want to have to keep my downstairs XP PC turned on to serve as a share controller, just have simple pin access to certain folders on the Naslite 2 box?

Is it possible to install something like samba or ccxstream on the NL2 box?

I have a similar setup. What I do is have the kids videos, etc in a separate folder from other video on on one of my NAS disks. The XBMC html file can then be edited to show only certain folders.

Per the manual:

===
NASLite-2 Security

The storage made available by NASLite-2 can be
set as Read/Write or as Read-Only. The same is
also true for the individual export services. Other
than that, storage is not restricted in any way. As a
community file server, any user capable of
accessing the NASLite-2 server via SMB/CIFS,
NFS, FTP RSYNC or HTTP can read and write
openly. Only the NASLite-2 Administration Utility is
password protected in order to restrict unauthorized
access to the Options Menu.
===

This was actually a selling point for me. After being locked out of another NAS (twice!), I realized that all I needed was a very large shared hard drive - and definitely NO security. I'm still building the server, but I anticipate NASLite will handle that nicely.

Thanks jmiliz... But if the XBMC only shows the kids folder, how do I get at my folder? Or am I missing something? Is it more of a profiles thing where you have separate profiles set up and pin protect one of them?

Did'nt think of that since my kids have the XBMC and I never use it. The newer builds have something called profiles which may do what you want.

This is taken from the XBMC forum:
XBMC supports multiple user profiles, much the same as setting up individual users on your home computer. These individual profiles allow you to customize the environment for multiple users, allowing for such functionality as:

Customized view settings such as skins for each user
The ability to lock folders, such as network shares on a per-user basis
Unique RSS feeds for each user
Unique keymapping for each user
Unique network settings
The ability to add scripts both globally or on a per-profile basis
All options stored in The UserData Folder can be customized per profile, allowing for an amazing amount of flexibility.
