Hi,

I just installed Naslite 2 on my old pc, 3.6gbAMD and the onboard network card wouldnt work it is based on the Realtek 8139, so i installed an intel 1gb card that is supported as well as one other and for some reason i cannot ping the naslite server or ping anything from it. I have set its ip address and made sure the network cable is working but still nothing.

Any idas on what else it could be?

thanks

In the Admin Main Menu ... under option 1 "Network Configuration" there's a sub-option 8 "Select Interface". Try either "First" or "Last".

I have tried that now and it hasnt made any difference. I do have another nas box on the network as well, its the old boot disk version. just mentioning it in case that makes any difference.

Have you tested the ethernet cable?

Yep, tried a couple that i know work. Now while the girlfriend was mucking about with the xbox in the lounge, it can see the new nas thru the SMB share as can my laptop i found out, but no ping, telnet or http... they are all on in the services menu...

So i cant contact it via ping, telnet or http from any PC in the house... is very odd.... i will NOT let it defeat me!.... my only thought at the moment is my old naslite one is stopping it from working so it doesnt get put out of commission.

Are you sure that the new NAS is not trying to use an IP address already used by another device on your network? Also, it is suggested that you set the IP address of the NAS outwith the assignment range of the DHCP server on the network.

I have a range i use for static devices and it is a free one. I have been mucking about a bit more and hooked up another switch in the room with it and my pc.. so the switch has an ip address which my pc can ping and the nas cant....

so a direct lick and it is failing to get a ping, i have disabled almost everything on the board, tried 3 different cards that all work, all intel.
I am having a thought that it might just not like my mainboard, it is a ecs with an ati chipset... RS480-M...
very odd, i have another one but it is only a 3gb sempron and i am not sure if it has the same amount of sata ports... well will take it to work and have a play tomorrow and see if it makes any difference... i would say it will..

Don't get so caught up with the speed of the processor, it's not important. What is is that the machine has a fair amount of RAM, 512MB is a good number, a good NIC, I like the older 3Coms and Intel cards, and quality drive/s. A RAID card, if you choose to go that route, needs to be supported.

At this point I would just rebuild the OS on the machine. If then the problem persists then I would go with a different board.

I have rebuilt the O/S, same issue, thrown it on the network at the office and same issue, so the other board only has 2 sata ports and i need 4 so will have to find one about. As for the speed, its more of a what i have lying about and as you understand faster is always better even if it makes no difference.. Same with Ram, why use 512 when you can fit 2gb in there... will try the other board anyway to see if it makes it work.

thanks

The main reason that a 3GHz+ processor is a waste is the energy it uses. Running full tilt you will be lucky to hit 20-25% processor usage, kinda a waste but more power to you. The more memory is great but there is little difference in the performance after a certain point, 512MB-1GB seem to be the sweet spot, again if you want to and have it throw more in. You will realize little or no difference in the overall performance of the NAS.

NL, and Linux in general, seems to work best with standard hardware by name brand manufacturers. My box is ROCK SOLID RELIABLE. I have very basic hardware and it just runs. There is something to be said for K.I.S.S. as you are now in the throws of learning.

Just for giggles, turn off all the computers in your network including the NL box or boxes. Unplug any and all network switches and devices and cold boot them all. Bring up the network hardware first to a quiescent state, then bring up the NL box. Finally, bring up one of the PCs and see if you can log into the HTTP status console of the NL box.

If all the above gets you nothing then try your other board, a PCI SATA controller can be had for only a few dollars, or euros if that's your thing, and will give you the extra ports you need. The controller will perform just as well as the on board one since they all are hanging off of the same PCI bus. Check and make sure that you get a controller that uses a chip that is supported by NL, see the hardware reference at the home page for info.

I set it up in another box, works fine.. so its my motherboard so will run down the road and grab a sata card at lunch time.
The only reason i am using such big PC's is that is all i have lying about these days. and the old office HP's only have room for 2 drives... now where is the use in that.... they are the desktops rather than the towers.. and i think all the ones we are fetting rid of are at least 3g anyway...
My old nas box is perfect, never misses a beat, old 1.6g runs the boot floppy version.. just a little slow on transfers to it but other wise the most perfect performing boxs i have ever owed... scary really...
