Hehe okay here are my results with 'n' set to 5000:

Reads seems to be pretty much rock solid but writes are all over the place... NickC have you tried switching the raid controller to a regular PCI-slot instead of the PCI-X one to see how this affects the numbers? I'm tempted to do so..

Sounds like a reasonable test : RAID card > PCI from PCI-X; VGA card from PCI > PCI-X;

I may try with and without the PCI-X 3Com NIC as well.

Okay I bought an external USB drive (WD MyBook) and am about to backup all my data on the NL-box. I will then run diagnose utility on each drive to verify that they are 100% ok and also wipe each drive with low level format. Then I will create the array from scratch and put a brand new install of NL2 on the USB-stick and keeping my fingers crossed. Not sure what I'm hoping for here but I just want to make sure the drives are 100% ok. Might try swapping the raid controller to the PCI slot instead of the PCI-X while I'm at it. Just to rule everything out.. if I still end up with the same numbers I basically have two options. Deal with the numbers I'm getting and wait for a new version of NL2 (with support for areca controllers? yay!) or just move to a different solution altogether.

All drives checked 100% error free. Any recommendations for stripe sizes? 4 drive RAID 5 serving mostly 700MB+files but also some smaller jpgs and documents. Rarely ever more than one user accessing the NL-box.

Switched back to RAID-5 and now getting the same numbers as before.. oh well at least now I know its not my hardware being faulty.

Improved speeds yay! But obviously the dip in the writes is 100% hardware related. I'm using a crossover cable so the switch is not the issue here. The PCI slot on this motherboard will not let you install the PCI-X card as there are capacitors in the way.. but it would have been a good way to see if there was indeed still issues with the PCI-X slot on this MB.

Just bit the bullet and bought an areca controller so until NL adds support for the arecas I'm sticking with window server 2k3. Me being a student it's actually free as well through dreamspark :)

did the new card address the write speed issues?
