I'm looking at using Naslite on my storage server. What's the difference between Naslite-2 and Naslite-M2?
I understand by reading the descriptions that Naslite-M2 can be used for UPnP and DAAP, but what are those,
and what are they used for?

Hi

Le "plain" version is a very fast file server. The M2 has the multimedia server function (and the file server function of course) . If you have music, movies etc, your music / video player will see the files as in a "library".

You can of course have the "plain" version et listen to music and watch videos but you have to manually navigate to the directory containing the files and clic on the file to listen or watch.

So Naslite-M2 is used more to watch videos/listen to music on a device such as an iPad,
game system, etc. To watch a video via Naslite-M2 on a computer you would need
to have XBMC, Plex, or some other such software like this installed. Correct?

Would I still be able to use it as a regular file server and if I wanted to watch a video
I could still just double click on the filename via the folder on the network server?

On any machine, any software that uses DAAP will work (here is a list on Wiki). Didn't test it but WinAmp, VLC, FooBar2000 etc work also (using DAAP or their own library service). Most of the software on the market can find the files on any server and make you a library. M2 version may be more friendly if you use iPad, game boxes.

The 2 versions are the most stable and reliable servers I've used (and I'm using computers since 1979...). If your main use will be file sharing, then buy the plain vanilla version. If you'll be using (or think you may be using) multimedia on DAAP compliant items, go for the extra buck and get the M2.

That answers my questions. My main purpose will be for file sharing, so I'll probably just go with the basic version. Thanks for all of the help!
