Hello,

Firstly, thank you for such an easy to use and helpful product.

I just received an email regarding a new version. I actually upgraded only two months ago. I upgraded because my system has a problem with IRQ's and I was hopeful it would solve them, alas not. I am hoping to find out if the new upgrade will resolve these issues I am having before I upgrade again.

To explain what is happening before the upgrade; the computer boots find, everything works no problems. Then after a period of around 24-28 hours (sometimes during boot up if discs are being scanned) I get my first IRQ (usually 16), this results in reduced transfer speeds from 10mbps to 1mbps, then if I leave the system longer, say 72+ after boot up I am guaranteed to get an additional 2 IRQ (usually 18 & 19) and transfer speeds drop from 1mbps to around 25kbps. If I remember to reboot the system everyday I can resolve this, however sometimes I forget and this impacts on software that relies upon the NAS working at 10mbps, i.e. back up software.

After the upgrade I rarely get IRQ 18 & 19 show up but eventually transfer speeds still drop from 1mbps to around 25kbps.

Look forward to your hearing your thoughts on this.

Thank you, Mark.

Most recent System Message Log (sorry I don't have one with IRQ 18 & 19 yet, but I'll keep watching and if I see it I'll post it if it helps in the diagnosis)

After a few reboots and checking I finally got all three IRQ. This was about 10 hours after a fresh reboot.

This questions has remained unanswered for over a month now. I have to reboot my NASLite system everyday to keep it functional. My enthusiasm for your product diminishes daily.

You definately have a hardware issue.

Have you made any bios adjustments?

Googling : irq 16: nobody cared (try booting with the "irqpoll" option)

Turns up thousands of hits.

I'll do a little research, you may have to add a kernel command line parameter for the kernel to ignore the bad hardwares behavior.

I agree it is a hardware issue. I have googled 'irq 16: etc etc' in the past and found too many solutions that are too complex or time consuming. I was hoping for some kind of software fix within NASlite, hence why I was asking if upgrading NASlite would fix this for me. I'm pretty sure it has something to do with the PCI ethernet card I had to install because NASlite doesn't recognise the onboard LAN on the MOBO. I've been looking at the FreeNas product, hoping this product might resolve the issue for me. Even a PC side script (I wouldn't know the first thing about writing a script to do this) that automatically reboots my NASlite every 24 hours would be a better solution, or the ability to do a timed reboot within the NASlite software, but thats is asking too much I feel. It is more simple and easier for me to just keep rebooting it everyday. It's not ideal, especially when I discover it's gone down during large transfers but I just need to remember that I'm using cheap software and not an expensive commercial NAS device.

Thanks for answering Ralph. I wasn't too sure how long an answer from the community would actually take. At least I have a benchmark now.

this is a bit of i think - well part of it is - you can run a scheduled task from windows [have never done it though] - i think it can be set to run at pre determined intervals - that assumes the windows computer is on 24/7 - if not then theres obviously a problem

but assuming it is then running this script will cause the naslite server to reboot as and when its run

change your ip addy and login details if you have changed them

save it and name it reset.vbs - i have tested it manually and it works - it leaves a dos window open - no idea how to auto close it

i cannot give credit but have to say the work is not mine - only one small part of it - altering it from close to reset - so anon credit to whoever wrote the original script

Code:
ServerName = "192.168.1.66"
Username = "admin" ' Current Username
Passwd = "nas" ' Current Password

XIT = "E" ' Used to "EXIT" from NAS. (upper-case E)
YES = "y" ' Used to confirm an option. (lower-case Y)
RESTART = "7" ' Used to SHUTDOWN NAS. (number seven)

DELAY = 1000 ' Minimum 500ms recommended; 1000 works well.

Hi

It is bizarre that you are stuck with this IRQ problem.

As you do not need and use most of the IRQs using some hardware of your motherboard (sound, serial...), it is strange that you have 2 hardware using the same IRQs. And, as the problem arrives after some time of use, I'm almost sure that you have some hardware that is heating and not working well with this heat.

One experience (if you want to have some fun ;) ) is to open your computer case and put in a fan to cool the motherboard and other hardware.

Try moving the NIC to a different slot for starters. Also disable all the devices on board that are not needed. If these fail to help then try a different NIC. NICs are cheap and can be had for a few dollars off of Ebay for the good Intel NICs.

I apparently misinterpreted the post, I thought you upgraded to the latest version and were having problems, it's appears your running a old version.

If the new upgrade is modern hardware, I would really suggest upgrading to the latest version of NL.

Hello All,

Thank you for all your comments, suggestions and helpful tips.

I've just upgraded to the new software and can now use the lan port on the mobo which is an excellent start.

I had an IRQ 16 on a disk check after rebooting for the licence key, and I'll post the System Message Log after this.

I'll keep an eye on the system and see if the IRQ problem is resolved.

If it does appear, I'm wondering it it might have something to do with the 2x 4port SATA PCI cards I'm using... anyway, I'll cross that bridge with you once or if I come to it.

Thanks again for all your support. It's greatly appreciated.

So what are the specs of the machine you are using and the make of the MB? Have you upgraded the BIOS yet? Have you tried doing a reset of the BIOS and turning off all the on board devices that are not needed? Have you tried to move the NIC to a different slot?

Give us this info for starters and try the above and see if the issues abate.

Mike
