I currently have an ancient version of NASLite-M2 (V1.02 03-2009). This weekend I was hoping to upgrade my disks from 4x1.5TB to 4x4TB, but NASLite is not recognizing the 4TB disks. From syslog I see:

May 25 21:30:25 [2] ata4: SATA max UDMA/100 cmd 0xF880F0C0 ctl 0xF880F0CA bmdma 0xF880F008 irq 22
May 25 21:30:25 [1] ata4: dev 0 cfg 49:2f00 82:346b 83:7d69 84:4163 85:3469 86:bc49 87:4163 88:407f
May 25 21:30:25 [2] ata4: dev 0 ATA-8, max UDMA/133, 7814037168 sectors: LBA48
May 25 21:30:25 [2] ata4: dev 0 configured for UDMA/100

SATA controller is the one built-in to my ECS RS400-A motherboard

Is this a sign I need an external SATA controller, an updated version of NASLite-M2, or both?

dont know about update to Naslite - but first thing to check surely is that other OS's can see the drives - boot with a linux distro and see if they are seen and you can use them - that does not guarantee Naslite in any flavour will work with them but i think if linux does not see them then its pretty certain you have an initial problem - from there the next thing would be a new sata card

Booted with a LiveCD and could see the new disks without issue. Upgraded to the latest NASlite-M2 and it also sees the new disks.
So yes, I need(ed) to upgrade.
Question answered :)
