I have a problem with a couple of folders I need to remove. Trying I get this message...

"The operation can’t be completed because the item “ ” is in use"

I have tried all kind of solutions except from doing a formatting via storage configuration (not a solution at the moment)

You can read more on this thread

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4686643

The answer I got is following..
"If it is, it's a bug or incompatibility in the NAS. Many consumer NAS devices use the dreadful "netatalk" implementation of AFP"

Any comments on this?

Thanks

Not the answer I wanted to hear...

Well, isn't it kind of apples fault? They refuse to provide a clear, concise, and stable API for the third party community to code to. Add to this that the target is always moving, I suspect on purpose, and breaking the services. Apple of course offers a server, oh that's right they don't any more, and when they did it was F all expensive!

We have apple products in our network and don't seem to have most of the issues others seem to be having. Then again it is an older MacBook Pro and the OS is older as well, hence Apple is not trying to actively break it any more. The other device is an iPhone5 and it doesn't seem to have issues. I do recall that there was a file that needed to be created and/or edited to get it to work. Did you do that? After I did that we could log in and read/write files.

Delete the files with FTP or from the terminal app.

"The operation can’t be completed because the item is in use"

Google the above error and see how many people have had this problem *without* a NAS attached, who's to blame there?

Here's a guy with the same problem with a USB drive, should we advise people not to use third party USB drives as well? or the dreaded NetaTalk on those drives, sorry sarcasm.

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3987969?start=0&tstart=0

The OS X Finder is the one denying the delete, why? NASLite squashes all the permissions to the user, NAS-User and all files read/write, and rebooting the OS X machine still results with the "in use" error.

I've been able to reproduce this copying the App Store application to my NL Box and trying to delete it. The Finder delete's most of the App folder then halts with the above error, at that point I went to my terminal program and cd'd to /Volumes/Disk-1 and issued "rm -r App Store.app" and deleted the file.

So, with that, the Finder won't delete the App folder, but the rm command from the OS X CLI will, does this appear to be a NL problem or a Apple problem?

Ralph,

Believe me I have been searching google and tried all combinations from the terminal I could find!

None is working...

I am not into bashing or sarcasm I just want this to work and find a solution so I know what to do next time it appears!

I have recently seen more problem when moving large amount of files between drives that is stops with this dreadful message "The operation can't be completed because the items is in use" I never had this before, now using OSX 10.8.2..

I will try with the FTP and hope for the best. I hope this can be solved or else I need a PC to fix it...

Thanks

If the ftp doesn't work, please post a webs listing of the files that won't delete.

You can get to webfs by pointing your browser at the root of your NL box, ie: http://192.168.1.1/

Post the files like this :

drwxrwxrwx NAS-User NAS-User Dec 14 07:04 <DIR> backups
-rw-rw-rw- NAS-User NAS-User Oct 18 18:33 20 GB World of Warcraft 2.zip

OK, next answer from apple support....

I am confused...

Quote:
You should not have any "AppleDouble" files. The only reason why you do have them is that the AFP implementation on the NAS is defective.

Perhaps I should leave those folder to live their own life or get a PC so I can remove them... why should life be easy...

Appledouble is a hidden folder, and is used to store various things. You shouldn't delete this.

Quote:
New AppleDouble backend "appledouble = ea" which stores Mac metadata and resource forks in extended attributes of the filesystem.

default backend (!)

requires a filesystem with Extended Attributes, fallback is "appledouble = v2"

converts filesystems from "appledouble = v2" to "appledouble = ea" on the fly when accessed (can be disabled)

dbd can be used to do conversion in one shot

Implementation details:

stores Mac Metadata (eg FinderInfo, AFP Flags, Comment, CNID) in an Extended Attributed named “org.netatalk.Metadata”

stores Mac ResourceFork either in

an Extended Attribute named “org.netatalk.ResourceFork” on Solaris (FreeBSD?) w. ZFS, or in

an extra AppleDouble file named “._file” for a file named “file”

the format of the ._ file is exactly as the Mac’s CIFS client expects it when accessing the same filesystem via a CIFS server (Samba), thus you can have parallel access from Macs to the same dataset via AFP and CIFS without the risk of loosing data (resources or metadata). Accessing the same dataset with CIFS from Windows clients will still break the coupling of “file” and “._file” on non ZFS filesystems (see above), so for this we still need an enhanced Samba VFS module (in the works).

As these days the only applications making use of Resource Forks are Adobe Photoshop (image preview) and Postscript Type 1 fonts, even on eg Linux you’ll get rid of 99% of any extra Netatalk AppleDouble files (and folders).

I would imagine, if you have DAAPD on for iTunes sharing and AFP on, the system wouldn't let you delete this. which produces this error :

"The operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -50)."

Also, files such as ._oXYgen Scan_1_1.tif are hidden files created by the Finder in OS X And you may see files named :filename as well.

_NL_SWAP is another folder you probably dont want to delete as well.
