Hi,

I've installed a new 2TB disk as Disk-1, rebooted, formatted, rebooted again and the thing doesn't show up as an accessible drive.
Repeatedly reformatting and rebooting still doesn't make the drive accessible.

I'm a bit befuddled by this. Why am I able to format, but not access the formatted drive after rebooting???

Any help/ideas would be appreciated.

Mark.

NB: Disk-0 always fails, no matter what disk I put in, so I use a dud disk in it's place.

Screen after Formatting Disk-1, exporting disk, saving configuration and rebooting the device.

Are disk 0 and 1 on the same controller? Per the syslog, I assume this is a Marvel firmware RAID device. Make sure the Marvel BIOS does not have any RAID pairs set up and 0 and 1 are set as single drives. Also make sure that the cables you are using for 0 and 1 are SATA2 or at least match the drive capability (in case of a SATA1 drive).

Hi Tony,

Thanks for your response.

Yes Disk 0 and 1 are on the same controller. There are no RAID pairs set up for 0 and 1. They are single drives, as they were prior to a new HDD being installed after the previous failed. Cables are the same also, but I checked just to make sure and everything is okay.

I had a onboard graphics mobo failure, so I've chucked in a new mobo, plugged in the USB boot drive. I'm now reformatting the Disk 1 to see what will happen. However, the problem I have now is that the NAS ethernet drivers don't match the new onboard mobo lan. Is there anyway around this without having to re-install? The new mobo has no IDE ports, which means I am using a SATA CD rom, which it can't mount, even with Bios set to IDE controllers instead of SATA.

Mark.

PS. Sorry for posting the licence key before and thanks for deleting - i didn't even realise.

So, hardware problems ;-)

The new board just needs a new unlock and you should be OK. If the NIC was not supported, the OS will just bail and shut down since it can't be a NAS without a NIC. If you are formatting drives, then you'll be in business after unlock.

Tony,

I formatted and mounted Disk-0 first, then after formatting and mounting Disk-1, Disk-0 failed and unmounted, but Disk-1 was mounted so back to normal and good enough for me. The same work around I must have discovered last time, but it was a while ago so I forgot. Hopefully this thread will remind me next time around :)

Also, the new unlock code was applied, but the NAS is not accessible on the network. I get an orange flashing light on the mobo nic. I'll keep trying, and I'll load up Ubuntu desktop and see if I can connect to the internet first, but is there any advice for getting a fresh install of NASlite on a mobo with no IDE or no working Sata IDE emulation?

Thanks for your help with this also, it's greatly appreciated.

Mark.

its a while since i did it so try this and see if my memory is good - take the drive you want to install Naslite onto to another machine where you have ide or whatever you need - install it but dont add the serial number and unlock code

put that drive back into your original machine - boot up and configure as you want adding serial number and unlock code

i think that should work

Well, that worked! *relief* I'll be printing this thread out and keeping it for future reference.

You had me scrounging around looking for an old system (that actually worked). My workshop is strewn with parts, cables etc trying to get an old system up and running just to do the install.

It got me thinking. As old systems start to be retired (like my previous with the onboard graphics mobo problem) and thrown out, how are people going to get NASLite up and running on newer systems in future, if it can't mount SATA CD/DVD drives? How are they going to do the initial install? NASLite is an awesome piece of software and I'd hate to see it go.

Uh... not quite there yet...

NIC green light solid, amber flashing... but I can't see the NAS on the network and pinging it returns unreachable... NAS IP address has been checked also.

I suppose I need to check the compatible hardware list now...

Pfft... just when I thought I was there...

Ah, it's a Realtek 8111E on my mobo...

Chucked in a PCI NIC I had lying around. Rebooted, changed NASlite Network settings to 'last', rebooted, disabled onboard NIC, rebooted and it's all working now.

*sigh of relief*

4 days to remedy this and I need a break...

I thought I was there... but another hurdle... *pulls hair out*

All the services are activated on NASLite, I can see the device in network places in Win7, but double clicking results in "Cannot Access" error.

I tried pinging the NAS a few times and I got a few MISCOMPARE errors, but now I only get "Request timed out."

However I can ping from NASLite, back to the computer I originally pinged it from with intermittent packet loss each time.

Could it be a faulty PCI NIC in the NASLite maybe?

I really need to fix this as I need the NAS up and working ASAP.

I'm a bit perplexed because I was able to HTTP over to the NAS, but after the reboot I can't even do that.
