Hi,
I have a NASLite-M2 server running on a Dell Dimension box with 2 X 1TB hard drives. Both disks are only about 1 year old. NASLite boots from a USB and generally is behaving fine.
However Disk-0 is acting up. Folders will disappear while others remain. Then they can all disappear. Then the disk disappears. The second disk is there and OK.
I discovered I can solve this by rebooting from a USB stick with Ubuntu. Then I shut down and re-boot from the original NASLite USB and all is well - for a while.
Then it start all over again aftera few days and the same disk begins to "degrade".
Any ideas? Is it just a faulty disk?

You need to run some sort of check disk utility on the suspect drive. NASLite has one in the tools menu if memory serves. You could also boot from Ubuntu and run one of the included utilities that way.

Thanks for your suggestions.
Telneted in to tools and ran extended SMART self-test. This failed.
Got a "device read identity failed (not an ATA/ATAPI device).

Then tried a filesystem check which also failed;
e2fsck 1.40.4
"Illegal inode number while checking ext3 journal for NASLite-SE000121."

I can try these from Ubuntu, however, I suspect they will work since I know booting into Ubuntu, of itself, fixes whatever problems are there.
Just wonder what's causing the problem in the first place before I go and buy a brand new disk - and maybe find the problem persists.

Have you checked the power and data cables?

This time when I booted into Ubuntu the problem drive was not visible.
As suggested I re-set data cables and on re-boot in Ubuntu the drive was visible.
It was fine on SMART and I ran a successful file system check from Ubuntu and subsequently from within NASLite tools.
The drive is fine so I'll go with loose fitting data cables. (The cables are plugged in to a PCI to SATA converter card.)
I have ordered a pair of SATA cables with securing clips which may help.

Thanks to all for replies and suggestions.

The 2 1 TB drives are SATA power only so I have had to use a Molex to SATA power converter cable.
I noted also that the connections here were loose/poor and in one instance they separated!
So echoing advice above my problem could also, or rather, have been loose power connections.
So simple things first; check data cables and check power cables.
