Hi,

I have a new NASLite-M2 system (Tyan Thunder K8SD PRO S2882D with an Opteron 246, 4GB DDR, 3 IDE HDD's, 1 SATA HDD) and have some issues. The main issues are:

1) Transferring files from HDD 1 to HDD 2 in NASLite-M2 with FTP? When I try to move/transfer a file from one disk in NASLite-M2 with FileZilla FTP I immediately receive and error for any file no matter what size it is, and no transfer happens.

2) When transferring large files (+5GB files) from my 2011 MBP (MacBook Pro) to my NASLite-M2 using FTP, the FTP loses connection and will not connect to the NASLite-M2 box... perhaps a router overheating issue as it only seems to happen with wifi?

3) Since I am using a MBP which in your experiences has been better for speed and transfers, FTP or AFP?

I have spent some time searching, so if you can share a link to a post i missed I would appreciate it. Thank you in advance for all of your help and time :)

Try AFP and let us know if you have the same issues, you should be using AFP if your using OS X

Thanks.

Hi Ralph,

I was able to transfer from one disk to another, but it was on the slow side :( It ended up transferring a 4GB file from DIsk-1 to Disk-2 and took about an hour... that seems a little odd considering the motherboard has an onboard Gigabit NIC, Gigabit switch, and my MBP has a Gigabit NIC.

So just to clarify, when I transfer one file or folder from Disk-1 to Disk-2, am I actually copying everything over to my MBP and then transferring it to the new disk (Disk-2), or is it a straight transfer from Disk-1 to Disk-2?

Also, I was noticing that I was only getting about 1-4 Mbs during the transfer... that seems a bit slow. I have disabled everything in the Tyan K8SD Pro BIOS that I do not need for the motherboard (10/100 NIC, Parallel, PCI-X slots, etc.)

I also noticed that my NASLite-M2 System uptime and Load Average were:

1 Minunte* - 409%
5 Mintute* - 289%
15 Minute* - 209%

Cheers, and I look forward to your reply. Thank you :)

I believe that I figured out a couple of bottle necks in the system causing the issues.

In my Syslog 'hdc' and 'hdd' were limited to UDMA 33 because I did not have a second 80-pin cable (I was using the old 40-pin style cable).I purchased an 80-pin cable and I have seen some considerable speed improvements for both hard drives

The SATA hard drive that I have on the LSI 150 MegaRAID PCI-X Sata 6 port card had one important thing I missed. I checked and noticed that the 'write cache' setting was not enabled. I corrected that and saw gains from average transfer speeds of 1-4 Mbps speed up to an average of 70-90 Mbps!

FTP still seems faster than AFP, even though FTP seems to time out/crash/disconnect, but I am happy that there has been a major improvement :)

One last thing :)

I installed NASLite-M2 to a spare hard drive I had laying around [Disk-0] but I am unable to utilize the extra space for storage (about 59GB). I also see that for Disk-0's Configuration Menu I only have one option for running the Extended S.M.A.R.T. Self-Test... but nothing else is available. Do I need to reinstall the NASLite-M2 CD and reformat Disk-0 to allow me to use that extra space?

The reason I ask in that in the Services Configuration Menu when I go to look at DAAP/UPNP Options I see Swap Area Target as [Disk-0] but below that there is a message that states:

"NOTE: Disk-0 is not available. DAAP/UPNP services will not start."

Any ideas? As always, thank you for your time and help, it is really appreciated :)

Hi I was going to point out the UDMA 33 but you did it faster ;)

As for the problem above, you have selected the wrong install option and will need to reinstall again with the correct option. Sorry, I can't recall which is the option number (have not been installing for some time ;) ) but it is quite explicit. Insert and boot from the CD and choose new install etc.

FTP is always faster than any other method (at least with Windows machines)

hi robrub,

Thank you for the response. I'll reinstall NASLite-M2 on HDD-0 and see about fixing that issue and report back. I am sure that it will be corrected, and I will report back either way :)

Thank you for the help :)

To follow up, I reinstalled NASLite-M2 on the system, but I still have the same issue with HDD-0.

I should point one thing out though. I am using a 2.5" IDE HDD from a laptop I had laying around, and a 2.5" to 3.5" HDD adapter (a mini PCB that plugs into the HDD and allows the 3.5" UDMA cable to plug into it). Could the adapter be causing the issue by not allowing the rest of the disk to be read?

Cheers :)

adaptor should not matter - its just a drive to the system - did you start again by removing the partition or just re install - there is an option to remove the install - that should clear the drive - if not clear it in a linux distro and start again with naslite

Hi Tony_a,

Thank you. I believe I just reinstalled... I will try the other mentioned way, and if that fails then a linux distro and follow up.

Thank you :)
