Looks like to update to NASLite-M2 v1.61 I have to install it on a new hard drive. I have 2 hard drives on it. The boot one is all most full and the 2ND drive could hold all the data on the 1ST boot drive. Is there a command to copy it all to the 2ND drive so I can then upgrade it?

Here is what the storage disk look like from it's web page:

I thought I could just upgrade it right over the system partion. It says it is using 62% so seems like could just update on that.

It has a 750GB and 1.5TB WD green hard drives on it.

Ray,

NASLite-M2 v1.61 is larger than its predecessor so in order to do an "HDD" install it requires a larger boot partition. That in turn necessitates repartitioning of the boot drive. Repartitioning of a drive that holds data can be dangerous and is not supported by the installer.

At any rate, in your case I'll move the contents of Disk-0 to Disk-1 and reinstall NASLite-M2 on Disk-0.

I want to do this right else all it could delete it all.

The IP for my NASLite-M2 is 192.168.2.185 So in telnet to it I did this:

Code:
 MIRROR PARAMETERS

Disk-0 can be set to mirror ( 192.168.2.185/Disk-1/12 ) as specified. The
provided mirror source contains the following parameters as follows:

 Mirror parameter settings:

      Remote: [ 192.168.2.185 ]
      Source: [ Disk-1 ]
      Mirror: [ 12 ]

But it says "Source: [ Disk-1 ]" I need Disk-0 to be the Source right? I guess I should go to
Code:
DISK-1 CONFIGURATION MENU
and not the
Code:
DISK-0 CONFIGURATION MENU
right? I was on DISK-0 Configuration menu.

I just thought of this. I don't think the mirror will work. Because it will delete all on the hard drive it will not just copy all and leave what's on it.

If I open a samba windows to each and drag and drop all the folders and files would that be the best way to move the files to the other drive.

I guess I could load a live Ubunutu CD and do a command to copy from one to the other in it? I am just not sure what's the best way to copy all the files from Disk-0 to Disk-1. With out deleteing what's all ready on Disk-1

I just tested a Drag and Drop folder from Disk-0 to Disk-1 but it changes the time and date on it. I like to keep the time and date if I could. So I hope there is a bettery way to copy the data.

dump the boot partition or at least the config and add a cf card via an ide/cf adaptor and boot from that

saves all the hassle and is upgradeable in the future without any risk to your files

There are of course ways of copying Disk-0 contents to Disk-1 with a LiveCD ... but another alternative is to deactivate the old M2 configuration on Disk-0 and to install the new M2 v1.61 to a USB stick and boot from that. You won't have to move any data.

P.S.: "tony a" had the same/similar idea ... I was just slower on pushing the "submit" :)

I never thought of that.

It has 2 SATA ports and one IDE port and the IDE is not being used. I have this Flash card to IDE.

Would that work? Does NASLite do a wight to it's system a lot. I guess if it did it like 10 or more times a day the Flash RAM could not work any more. I know they have a limit of how meny wights you can do to them.

Or it has a lot of USB ports. Could I install the system on a USB device. If so what is the min. size for one. I have a 128MB one that could use. after that 4GB ones.

i think it only writes when you tell it - the initial install and any save configs - i say i think - others will know better

but that will work - card is far too big - 32meg is enough for naslite - m2 may be a bit more?

Thank you. I got it working.

Removed the power from the 2 SATA drives. Then booted from a USB CD-ROM and had my 128MB USB flash drive plugged in and set the BIOS up to boot from the CD-ROM.

It worked out good and on the 1ST reboot set it for the 128MB flash drive.

What's neat is it set the flash drive as Drive-2 so it left the Drive-0 and Drive-1 like they were. If it did not I could have to change links to it.

I have pyTivo running on my Ubuntu server and it links to the photo and videos I have on my NASLite M2. It's neat to play the videos on a TV and not the computer.

It all worked good. Took a little longer then I thought but it's all set up and working good now.

It's neat it can work on this USB because it's very small in size in both ways.

This is a photo of it so you can see the USB on the back. It's all under a shelf I have over my bed room closet.

Now I know why it's good to use a USB to boot from. Easy to upgrade.
