Sorry its going to be a long post this one, i just hope someone can help.

i work at a signs and banner manufacturer and we installed naslite m2 onto an old PC and got 2 drives for backupo and everything has been fine and dandy up until this week, we run 2 large format printers, 2 laser printers 5 xp machines 1 windows 7 ultimate pc and windows 7 home laptop. everything has been running fine.

When we first put the win 7 computer and laptop into the network we had to disable the homegroup options to the usual "work network" with all the settings for 40bit enription no passwords etc in advanced settings with network discovery etc. everything was working fine.

then this week, the windows 7 PC, when i brought back from overnight hibernation the network only listed the other win 7 laptop, and no xp machines and no naslite fileserver, 1 other pc did spring into life as i had mapped an external drive that was connected to it, but i hadnt mapped any of the fileserver drives, nor any other of the drives on the other xp machines.

I still have the FILESERVER media icon and i can connect to it and view music and videos so it is able to make a connection and the http admin screens but the folder side of it saying disk-0 and disk-1 just wont show up no matter what i do , i did install the latest version of naslite 1.6.5. because of the issues with SMB shares, but i dont think this is the problem.

i have re installed windows 7 and its still the same, no xp machines or fileserver i have reset the tcp stack and various other services to see if thats the problem and windows is reporting back that everything is ok.

it just p*sses me off that when i am at my busiest time i get this and have to start from scratch again, i would appreciate any help anyone can give me with this, as my boss who thought the nas box was the best thing since sliced bread and now as its not working with win7 he aint a happy bunny.
thanks
Alan

Have you rebooted the NL server?

Have you changed any hardware on the NAS? Did you check and see that the unlock key is valid? Did you have a power outage? IF so it might have brought the server down and require a file system check. Normally this will run at boot and fix any file system inconsistencies but if you don't have enough RAM and are running multi-terabyte drives it will fail and simply not mount the drives until you run FCSK successfully. If this is the case you may have to add RAM.

IF the above fails and all looks well try this next.

Try turning off all the machines and then bring up the internet router first, likely the DHCP server as well. Next the NAS box and give it time to come up and bring any services on line. Then bring up each machine after that.

Post back your log file as well.

Mike

Just to check: have you upgraded NASLite to the latest version? This is necessary due to a Windows update which has affected SMB access - no fault of ServerElements, rather Microsoft "breaking" something that was otherwise working, presumably to stop potential exploits.

Sorry i should have mentioned the fileserver is working fine with all the other machines, i have upgraded it to the latest version which says 1.6.5 its just the fact that my computer now refuses to see anything but a damn windows 7 machine. Ive done loads of searches on google about this problem, which seams to have raised its ugly head loads of times with different people, but there isnt 1 sure fire way of fixing this problem that i can find.

After completely re installing windows 7 onto a clean drive, making sure that all the ethernet drivers for the nic cards are ok (this PC has 2) and that all other drivers are ok is making me think that it may not be the PC and be something else, i just don't know it's driving me round the twist. The network and fileserver are fine with XP machines and the other win 7 laptop, its just this 1 PC.

thanks for your replys, any help with this is much appreciated.

Did you or didn't you restart your switch to clear the routing cache?

Is the netmask set correctly?

Is the IP correct?

Is the workgroup set correctly?

Thanks for that Mike, yep i did all the above, i have brought the machine home to try it on my home router, i have done a complete re install, i am going to get all the related software i need on it whilst it is here, and then get it to talk to the works router when i get it back there, one thing i did notice was when i brought it home it wouldn't find the other xp machine, so i went into network and settings clicked on its own drive and said create shortcut to itself, i then altered the shortcut link to the xp machine, and it found it!

hopefully i'll be able to use the same trick at work

well i managed to get it working at home with my router there, I brought it back to work here yesterday, and it was working showing all the other pc's (6xp and 1 win7) I come in this morning, and again its only showing the nas server as a media device and not as a file folder, i think it may be the router thats playing up, i have disabled ipv6 which usually brings the naslite back on line, i even mapped disk-0 to drive z just incase it was because i hadn't mapped any drives. and its the latest version 1.65 june 2011 of naslite.

anyone any ideas please, as i have to have this back up and running for Monday
