I have just initialised and formatted my new 4x2TB array (giving 5.37TiB usable). To populate this with the data from the soon to be decommissioned 4x1TB array in my server I started a mirror early this afternoon. During the mirror I have received some messages I wasn't expecting. Following are 5 code-blocks containing portions of the SysLog: boot (moved to next post as post exceeded 60000 bytes..... :( ), ECC error correction on 3Ware card, other error 1, 2 and 3.

Code:
Jan 4 12:24:57 [4] 3w-9xxx: scsi6: AEN: WARNING (0x04:0x0039): Buffer ECC error corrected:address=0x32E2800.

Hey Nick,

It's a shame no one has responded to this question in 25 days. It's especially troubling that your post has been ignored from the support staff here, given NASLite being a commercial product. If you eventually come to the answer yourself please post a follow-up. I'm about to go through the exact same procedure in the next couple of days and now I'm dreading running into this.

The support staff is all of Tony and Ralph, all others here help out of the goodness of their hearts. The only thing we get is a beta test release to thrash on before the production release of the distro and an update to the present release.

As far as the error is concerned Please keep in mind that the support for the 3Ware 9550 cards were just recently added and some features are sometimes not supported in the drivers that are available to Tony and Ralph. Other times they are simply poorly implemented on the part of the driver developers. It looks to me to be an issue with the 3Ware card but it will take Ralph to figure out what and if the issue really is. Try a PM to one or both of them.

Mike

I should have said it's a shame Tony or Ralph hasn't responded. I know it's just the two of them, but if they are profiting from the sale of this software they have a liability to provide support for it when they sell it as such.

If I didn't respond to a customer in 24 hours I'd probably be fired. 25 days is ridiculous, although if it were urgent I probably would have PM'd one of them :)

As far as this issue goes, I don't think it's NL. I kicked off an rsync last night and it's still going strong. No errors in the logs and it should have my 4.5TB copied over in about another day or two. It smells like a network issue.

I think, if anyone even bothers to read Nick's post, you will see there's alot of hardware errors, such as the one from above I quoted. I sell software, not hardware support, unless it's something that has appeared in the past that I'm aware of, I'm probably not going to answer since I don't know and leave it to someone in the community who may know.

Tony a, I'll contact you during the next round of testing and add you in.

Hence my statement to the effect about it being appearing to be a 3Ware issue, Ralph.

I seriously doubt that these two are making a "Killing" selling the software. I doubt that they are making a living from it either. The user base is not that large, there are only just over 2000 registered site members. It's likely that allot of the registrants are for simple questions or just spammers. Open source is at the core of the package so one must keep that in mind.

You need to also keep in mind that you have the option to roll your own version of a NAS from the same repositories used by Tony and Ralph. Then of course all the issues that you end up with from the various software packages and drivers are also on you.

I and the few other regulars here don't always have a good answer and so stay silent. I also have a life outside of NL and come to think of it.... beer, BEEEEEER!!!!

Totally understand. I never said they did. I've developed commercial software that I support, and I've also contributed to the public domain and released source code in hopes others can support when I can't devote the time. The paradigms are completely different. Stand by your software or call it shareware.

Don't get me wrong, I like NL. I've used it for years. I also enjoy reading most of the forum and know how helpful the community is. It's a testament to the great product and the developers and I hope it keeps going for a long time. What I don't like however are customers getting put on the back burner after they've dropped some hard-earned cash. Maybe I'm just anal about good customer service. Maybe I should just keep my opinions to myself.

I couldn't agree with you more on that!
