Firstly, I'm wondering if anyone here is or has used BE to backup the contents of their Naslite box and how it was done.

I'm using a fairly current version (12.5) on Windows 2008 and BE can "see" the NL box, but when I try to expand the selection it fails on authentication. "Permission/access denied". I've tried using the admin credentials of the box, but no dice.

I tried SMB mapping the drive in Windows 2008 but BE won't see the drive. Presumably because they want you to install and purchase a Remote Agent Client license.

I even tried taking an Ubuntu distro, installing (and licensing) a Linux/Unix Remote Agent Client, and NFS mounting the NL server. No dice. BE will back up files on Ubuntu, but completely ignores the NFS mount.

I'm not sure what my options are at this point - I obviously can't install a Remote Agent Client on NL itself, but I would love to find out if there is some way to trick BE to authenticate.

Any suggestions that would allow me to use the LTO2 autoloader attached to the Windows2008 server would be much appreciated.

I don't know Symantec BE so just talking "general" information here...

Normally, there should be no authentication to acces NL. Did you try (if possible) Anonymous and no password?

If BE can work with FTP, why not use FTP?

Sorry if I'm "off subject"

No worries, Rob.

I'll try anonymous w/o password but I don't think that's the issue here. BE does not backup by FTP.

I'm hoping that Tony or Ralph can comment about the authentication issue Someone else reported the same problem on experts-exchange and eventually decided to blow off NL and load a full Ubuntu distro:

not used BE for yonks - could never get on with it

have just backed up a couple of movies using Acronis True Image 2010 - worked fine - dont know if M2 is different with permissions and whether thats the problem

but worth getting hold of a copy and seeing if that does what you want

Thanks Tony - maybe that's the route I'll eventually need to go: copy/backup to file(s) in an OS that BE can communicate with, and then back that up to our LTO2 autoloader. I was hoping I could skip this very time consuming (and IMHO unnecessary) step.

One other method that BE supports for NAS is the NDMP protocol. Although it is an expensive BE option ($1800) we have an unrestricted license due to our partnership with Symantec. I don't see it expressly supported, but I'm wondering if it can be in a future release?

Still hoping to hear from the big guys.

I just happened into this page as I don't have BE but I do have Acronis True Image 2010.

Thanks Tony, you just gave me another use for Acronis. I never thought about using it to backup my NL box.
