Interestingly, I bought a new switch today. Just a Linksys EG008W (they only had an 8 port switch) and hooked up up to the NL box with the Intel NIC in place. I booted it up and after having to wait for a FileSystem check of my 1.5TB array (Yuck) it stayed up at 1Gb (per the network card and status screen) I then connected my Win 7 PC to the switch and tried to copy a 4.36GB DVD that I have ripped to the Win7 HDD over to the NL box. after about 15 seconds (the amount of time that the copy would take never showed up) I got an error that I wasn't connected to the NL box anymore (this is the same error I was getting with the Netgear card). I went to the machine was going to log in and check the network however the entire machine was frozen. I had no keyboard and couldn't access the machine which was different than what I experienced with the Netgear card. I then had to hard reboot again and check the filesystem again (wish I could skip this sometimes). I've attached the log. This definitely sounds more like a hardware conflict than what I was seeing with the netgear card.

I think you have your answer. Change the MB and lesson learned.

Yep...now I just gotta find the right one to switch it to cuz I don't want these issues in the future....

All I want is a screaming fast NAS box, is that too much to ask :) LOL

Hopefully my post in the hardware forum will yield the right board

You want a screaming fast NAS?

Think a dedicated SAS or Fibre Channel RAID appliance with a Dedicated iSCSI bridge of NL with a FC-AL HBA. Get out your wallet.

We have well in excess of $2000.00 dollars in the hardware at this point and am getting close to posting the results.

I can tell you that our Sun V20Z was stupid fast, especially considering that it was just one drive, at over 70MB/sec. These can be had on Ebay for reasonable prices.

no I was joking as I don't need a screaming fast NAS. Really the 100mb works for me but I don't like waiting for files to copy over when I'm copying over 5GB of DVD i'd rather wait 3 minutes than 11 minutes is all...

Like I said, I can have 3 computers streaming movies off it right now at 100mb and they all play just fine....i'll keep the budget down and live with just faster....

Hey, after I put in the new switch and it locked up on the Intel card, I put the netgear card back in. It has been working at 1000Mbs per second but data transfers seem very slow. I notice you guys use diskwriggler to test data transfer speeds but I can't seem to find a version that runs on Windows (Win 7 64bit). Is there a way to test my speed over to the NL server from Win 7?

Try http://www.xdt.com.au/Resources/Open_Source_Software/ (use the XP version and run it in a cmd window with the parameters that you can see others using (Mikeivers are a good place to start))
