There are allot of things that influence the performance of a machine. some just don't perform while others of more modest hardware scream!

As far as the RAID5 performance being faster then say a single drive, well that depends on the controller. Remember that RAID5 requires a total of 4 I/O operations per write and it takes a good bit of horse power to perform the parity checks in real time.

I'll need to dig out the specs of the 9500S-12 but I think that it should be significantly exceeding that write speed.

Right here is the final update on this.

Currently got the final release M2 64 bit installed to a 512Mb CF Card on an IDE adaptor Arima HDAMA Motherboard with single Opteron 250 CPU 4Gb ram Intel chipset (82543) Fibre Nic.
3Ware 9500s-12 + 3ware 9550sxu-8lp raid cards in an Xcase RM420 rackmount case http://www.xcase.co.uk/X-Case-RM-420-Hotswap-4u-p/case-rm420.htm with 850 watt PSU.

12 x 1.5 Tb Hitachi drives (Raid 5 with hotspare giving 13.4 TiB) and currently 4 1 TB Samsung drives (Raid 10 giving 1.8TiB) performance is OK I think.

I would say that your performance is in line with hardware limits.

You might consider an Opteron 270 at this point. This would get you a pair of cores and a Hyper Transport Bus running at 1GHz rather than your current 800MHz.

I have the same basic case waiting for a bunch of drives, how is the cooling on it? What are the drive temps running with the stock cooling configuration?

I think we are at the point where the hardware starts to become the limiter of the ultimate performance of the servers. I don't think that most any of us have gotten there to this point.

I have 28 10K RPM FC-AL drives coming this next week that are going in a hardware RAID5 ASAP. It will be interesting to see what kind of numbers the setup will produce.

Mike

The cooling seems to be quite good (it is very noisy hence it is in the garage as for drive temps How do I measure this never done it before. I could go and get a thermal probe i suppose but I guess that there should be something out there to monitor this.

Did you check to see if the MB you are using supports that processor?

I removed the 3COM 3C996B-T NIC and speeds seem to have improved a bit. I ran another diskwriggler this evening and was really quite pleased with the results for a 1MB frame size:
Code:
j:\UserData\WAV\tmp>dw x 8192
=====================================================
 Select frame-size to use:
=====================================================
 A : 64KB; B: 128KB; C: 256KB; D: 512KB; E: 1024KB
=====================================================
Select frame size: A to E [A,B,C,D,E]?E
Frame Resolution  : 512 x 512
Bytes / Pixel     : 4.00 (padded) (10 bit, 4:4:4 sampling)
Frame Size        : 1,048,576 bytes
File Type         : All frames in one container file (8,589,934,592 bytes).

Writing 8192 x 1048576 byte frames into file x:\/framestream.dat
