Doug, I didn't catch how much RAM is in that machine? Filesystem check can be a pig. With that much iron spinning however, I'm sure you have plenty of silicon to back it up. Keep us posted on how it does.

BTW, the release ISOs are almost ready to go. If all goes well you may see them out by Wednesday.

Tony

I have 4 GB Ram in the machine have dropped it to single CPU to save on power and it has been rock solid for arround 3 days now just had to reboot it yesterday to move it to its final location.

That should be more than enough and overall performance should also be very good. The x64 version will likely not make much of a difference, but with those specs i see no reason not to go that route.

Tony

That is what I am waiting for as my licence is for 1 x 32 bit (on my other machine) and 1 x 64 bit which is what I have been testing with so hope you dont mind that I will upgrade this machine to 64 bit to comply with the licence as soon as you release it.

And once again Thankyou Thankyou Thankyou for an excellent product and your quick response to the problems that we have been having.

Those are not very impressive numbers from that card. How many drives are hanging off of it?

Six 1TiB Samsung 7200 drives in RAID 6
3Com OfficeConnect Gigabit Switch
Intel D915XXX board
Intel Pro/1000 GT NIC
P4-2.8 / 2GB DIMM
CAT5e cable

I agree, not very impressive. But it's working....

I'm not an expert on DiskWriggler ... and so this may be a stupid question ... but when all else fails ... ?all questions are intelligent? :)

What is your client h/w & o/s (the PC with the C: prompt) and is it running anti-virus plus possibly other processes ?

I asked myself the same question....

Intel 875PBZ with 1000MB NIC onboard
P4-2.8 / 4GB DIMM
Promise FastTrack S150TX4 RAID controller w/2 Samsung 320/7200

Viruskiller: Avira (no influence on DW)
Further no heavy processes.

I could try to switch to hardware RAID, but I doubt if that would improve throughput.

also maybe a stupid question but you are definately testing the raid arent you and not something on the IDE channell that is limited to ATA0 at 33mhz.

Just a thought as I am getting considerably better than that to my raid at approx double your figures.

Doug.

I'm thinking IRQ issues. I would try moving the card to a different slot.

What O/S ... WinXP ? And what ServicePack ?
Take a look at Performance Monitor and check how saturated the "Networking" is on the client (in WinXP how many % on the graph; in Vista/Win7 under "Performance" you can do "Resource Monitor" and get "actual" bytes/sec).
And (depending on O/S) try reducing 4GB to 2GB. What speed is the memory at and is it dual-channel mode ?

Thanks for your advice.

I doubt if there is a IRQ problem. Throughput to my other NAS, with a low-end 3Ware card is consistent with throughput to 9690: quite a bit lower.

So, if there is a bottleneck, it would be my old Intel 875PBZ motherboard. Maybe the on-board NIC?
Networking: Upstream uses 35-40% of capacity, downstream about 22%
OS: XP SP3
Memory: 184 pin DIMM PC3200 / 4 banks with 1GB

DiskWriggler:
diskwriggler -NTSC -C -t -n 2000 -o \\192.168.1.112\Disk-0

I still think that there is an issue. I was getting nearly three time the read rate from one single drive on a test machine. You should be slamming into the limits of the network with one of those cards. That is a SAS RAID card and rates very well as far as performance on transfers. Are you sure that you don't have a failed drive in your array?

@ Mike: no failed drives, everything functions normal.

@ Tony/Ralph: any NASLite-2 3Ware repairs on their way? I Need to finish an operation, and N2 is a necessary ingredient.

Installed M2x64 v1.62 this evening and also added a 640GB WD drive on a SATA port on the motherboard.

Single Drive:

So, 49.95MBps average write and 31.36MBps average read on the single drive and 33.49MBps average write and 26.79MBps average read on the RAID5 array.

Am I missing something, or should the RAID5 array not be significantly faster than the single drive?

[edit] Out of interest, I tried the same benchmark on another of the same 640GB WD drives in my PC:
