I've been using Openfiler for the past year and overall it's been working well. One thing I miss however is AFP support and better power management which I can get from NASLite-M2 so I'm considering switching.

In my current configuration, I'm using 4 SATA disks, all in EXT3, no RAID at all, and I use rsync for replicating important data from disk to disk for additional peace of mind.

How difficult would it be to transfer this configuration to NASLiteM2? There's a total of almost 2 terabytes of data on this server (> 1 tera free), so of course I'd love to be able to just transfer the drives, but I know that such things are often difficult or impossible.

I'd just like to know from the experts how feasible it would be. Thanks.

If the ext3 partition on the existing disks is part1 then they should mount fine on naslite. You'll have to change the permissions of all the existing files and folders to gid/uid 98/98 which is the default naslite user. Cant think of anything else other then the version ext3 openfiler is using. If it's using a later version with fancy capabilities like encryption and compression, then naslite may refuse to mount it. In that case, i'd format the free terabyte on naslite and start moving content using the naslite mirror.

Thanks for the tips, dimension. All the partitions are ext3: that's what you meant by "part 1" right? The first partition? Only one of these disks has more than one partition (two) and both are ext3. But I don't think that would be a problem.

I'm really not too Linux and network saavy, so I managed to get Openfiler to work by trial and error. I know it uses "LVM" to manage it's volumes hierarchy. Does the LVM structure matter in any way to the reading and handling of these disks under NASLite?

Openfiler does have a sophisticated permissions structure that has caused me lots of grief, and that I really don't need seeing as my server is for home office use. It'll be a pleasure to finally get rid of that. I never enabled any encryption or compression and I don't believe any of my disks are setup that way.

Would it be safe to boot NASLite from USB key on this system to see if it'll see the drives and their contents? Would it modify anything on the drives without user intervention? That might be the simplest and fastest way to see what's what.

Thanks!
