What would be the process of moving from NASLite USB to NASLite M2?

Load and configure M2 on the USB key and reboot.

It won't reformat my drives, will it?

Can I leave my NAS-USB running, remove the USB to another computer, install M2 on the USB, take the USB back to the NAS, and re-write the configuration, reboot, and have it work?

Alternately, what you can do, using a windows machine, overwrite naslite.01 and naslite.02 on the usb drive with the files of the same name from the CD-ROM.

Interested in migrating from USB to M2 but not quite sure - currently I use CoralDVD9 to run stored DVD video files residing on the NL server, without a problem. As the upgrade would cost me some $22.72, could someone tell me how my interface would be improved/changed? I like the uPNP features and would upgrade but .....nearly $23????

Would like to hear of experiences before opting; many thanks, jeffjohn

I would like to draw your attention to that fact that MS windows server is about 15 times as much and the performance and ease of setup will not match that of NASLite 2.0 or M2. If your stuff works just fine off of NASLite then why do you feel the need to run uPNP via an M2 install?

Hi mikeiver! I was not complaining about the cost of NL; merely seeking to justify the incremental cost of upgrading to M2. My query is based on the fact that I currently access video DVD via WinDVD9 by Source-> File and scrolling down to the relevant NL DVD files and selecting the video_TS file to play; quite time consuming. This works without a problem but is not particularly accessible to family members. Now, if an uPnP access to Media file gave me a more friendly root such as an instantaneous DVD image to select, then I would 'upgrade'. I am asking "is there any difference?".

On the MS Server software pricing, I do actually have it; but I am a fan of NL for its low-overhead, low system demands, elegance, total reliability and yes, of course, low cost - not to mention the exemplary forum of course!!

Just tried that today and it didn't work... Here's what I did...

* Create bootable partition on my 1-gig USB stick using NASlite 2.06 (the option to create a partition type seems to have disappeared in NASlite 2.10 (hmm...).
* Bring the USB stick and the M2 CD to another computer.
* Attempt to copy NASLITE.01 and NASLITE.02 from the CD to the USB.
* Was told that the destination disk was full and NASLITE.02 didn't fit...

Since my BIOS only boots from a bootable partition and the M2 installer (currently) does not support creating such, and copying the M2 files over a previous installation does not work, I guess I'm stuck.

Is there any way to get my setup working with M2? I know there is an update coming (when?) with support for creating a bootable partition and I can wait for that, I guess...

I believe Tony said in like a month or so.

If you have access to partition magic you can expand the bootable partition and then copy over the two files.

you can extend volumes in vista if you have that - not sure if it was in earlier windows

again not sure if it works on usb sticks - but worth a look

The vista volume expander will only work under very limited parameters, the volume has to be dynamic and NTFS.

It won't work here.

Attempted an upgrade and having problems. When I boot M2 I get a message saying my License is not valid. I have never had to change this in the past. Here is what I did.
I removed the USB stick from a running NAS and used the CD on a windows machine to install M2 to the USB stick. I put the USB back in the NAS, logged in and saved configuration. I rebooted and now cannot use M2 due to invalid license.

So, go and request a new license from the Serverelements site and enter it in. The old one is invalid with the new one but it doesn't cost you anything to request a new one and you get it instantly. If you are not up and running in less than 3 minutes the you are a total n00b! :P Just do the same thing you did when you first installed NL and all will work just fine.

Thanks for the quick reply. I saw the new license in my email link and all is good. Problem is, my NAS runs for so long without any problems that I never think about it and forget what to do.
