Upgraded from CDD to M2 last weekend and all seems fine apart from the UPNP service seems either not to be working or doesn't start.

DAAP working fine (once I realised I had to have AFP running at least RO).

UPNP configured and saved/rebooted etc. Swap on Disk-0 (though have also tried the other three disks I have in there).

Terminal screen on boot doesn't show UPNP under 'Starting servers'.

Web status pages show UPNP as 'UP'.

Memory usage by UPNP is shown as zero.

Swap space used shown as zero.

Disk configured for swap contains _NL_SWAP directory.

Contents are daap.log, VRAM and songs.gdb - 1kb, 3.1gb and 2mb respectively.

Syslog final entry after the disks mount is 'Unable to find swap-space signature'.

Machine has 1.5gb RAM.

WMP11 or Network not showing the UPNP device (but does find MediaTomb running on my Linux box).

The only disk with stuff under MEDIA has about 13000 MP3 files and as already mentioned, I can see them fine under iTunes.

Any ideas?

Sounds like a corrupt or locked swap file. Try the following:

- Disable DAAP and UPnP
- Save configuration
- Reboot
- Via FTP delete the _NL_SWAP folder and everything in it from all drives
- Reboot
- Enable DAAP and UPnP
- Set the swap target to a writable storage drive ie Disk-0
- Save configuration
- Reboot

That didn't solve the problem.

After switching off DAAP and UPNP, saving config and rebooting, examination of the drive contents showed the _NL_SWAP directory had gone and wan't present on any drive.

I re-enabled DAAP, UPNP, set swap to Disk-2 and saved/rebooted again. Sure enough the directory now appeared on Disk-2.

However, UPNP is still showing as UP but zero memory usage on the web status. Swap space is shown as zero also.

Directory contents are shown below ...

ftp> ls -l
200 PORT command successful. Consider using PASV.
150 Here comes the directory listing.
-rw-r--r-- 1 ftp ftp 3175088128 Jan 21 08:32 VRAM
-rw-r--r-- 1 ftp ftp 298 Jan 21 09:03 daap.log
-rw------- 1 ftp ftp 5271870 Jan 21 09:03 songs.gdb
226 Directory send OK.
ftp: 197 bytes received in 0.00Seconds 98.50Kbytes/sec.

Syslog final entry is ...

Jan 21 08:32:37 [4] Unable to find swap-space signature

DAAP log shows ...

2009-01-21 08:32:32: Starting signal handler
2009-01-21 08:32:33: Loading playlists
2009-01-21 08:32:33: Initializing database
2009-01-21 08:32:33: Starting mp3 scan
2009-01-21 09:03:23: Starting web server from /export/Status on port 3689
2009-01-21 09:03:23: Scanned 12733 songs in 1851 seconds

... and I can see the server/files in iTunes.

No sign of a UPNP device on my network though ...

That's strange :?

Can you post a syslog?

What on your LAN has IP 172.16.1.33?

Also, how did you install M2? Did you upgrade from HDD?

Stuff's missing from this syslog. No clue why. Second line of a normal syslog should read liek this * _date_ [4] Linux version 2.4.36.NASLite (root@tzt) (gcc version 3.4.6) #2 Wed Jul 16 21:48:01 EDT 2008 and it's missing. Something's not right.

I was running the latest version of CDD (having upgraded several times).

I'm running M2 now booted directly off the CD.

172.16.1.33 is in the DHCP range of my network - today it's my Vista box.

Today's startup syslog is below ...

Is the Vista machine connecting to M2 via NFS? If so can you disable that and reboot to see if the swap will be rendered. The syslog does look a bit odd with random items missing.

Also try burning another CD but this time do it at the slowest speed for your CD burner. Try that next.

I have to say I'm puzzled by this. :?

Another thing - Ralph pointed this out...

Can you back out some of the RAM temporarily and run a test. I think we may be timing out. Try it with 512M or so and see if that works.

I took out one of the three DIMMs to take the memory down to 1GB and UPNP started up - there was quite a delay between DAAP and UPNP being displayed on startup so I guess the timeout theory was correct.

The swap space allocated was less - about 2gb. Web status shows swap in use.

I can see the UPNP service (using generic) in WMP11.

I'll keep the memory out for now until the issue is fixed in a later release.

Thanks for the help.

Good. Now that we know what is the cause, we'll address it before v1.01 is out.

Great many thanks for sticking through it.
