I installed NanoNAS SMB 2.0 on an old Pentium III box and everything went well, I see the shares from my XP boxes, did the storage configs, etc. The primary goal was to use it as NAS storage for a PVR machine based on Snapstream's Beyond TV software. I got the following problems:

1. Files break consistently at 2Gb. I confirmed this many times, tried to copy files from XP to a NanoNAS share through many different ways, the transfer consistently breaks at exactly 2Gb, claiming the network became unavailable. I don't know this to be a problem with current incarnations of Samba and the Server Elements site consistently claims that the size limit is actually 4Gb. While not perfect, I can definitely live with 4Gb. I would have not gone for the NanoNAS if I knew there's a 2Gb limit. Am I doing something wrong? Is there some setting somewhere I'm missing??

2. There is a very annoying intermittent lock issue, where trying to delete/copy/move some number of files gives the "the mounted file system does not support extended attributes" error. The error is completely random and eventually the operation goes through, but this defeats any idea of a file server, which is what my system was intended for.

Help.

Thanks.

Bought NasLite USB, installed on a CF to IDE adapter (my motherboard would not boot from USB) and solved all problems mentioned in the previous post.

Overall I'm very happy with NasLite, especially that I get to brag that I'm running it on a PIII machine. Very neat system, low on resources, incredibly small footprint and quite complete.

On a more sad note, never got an answer to any of my questions sent via the support page, or via this forum.

I'll take a look at it when I get a chance.

Well,

I am absolutely amazed at how well NanoNAS was received. The number sold in the short time it was available far exceeded both Ralph's and my expectations. However, modemman was correct in posting the note about the 2G limit of NanoNAS SMB. We have confirmed that to be the case and are currently working to correct that limit.

Since that is the only item we've been informed of, I'd like to ask if there are any other issues people have run into so we can get as many things resolved as possible. Other than that, the release will include a 2G to a 4G limit fix for NanoNAS SMB. NanoNAS AFP will remain as is.

Any comments or questions are welcome.

The samba daemon used in NanoNAS SMB has been fixed - completely eliminating the filesize limit. Next release of NanoNAS SMB will support files larger than 4G and will therefore be perfectly suitable for use as DVR storage. Updates will be release sometime this week.

Yep, 8G and going. Works like a charm. Getting rid of the filesize limit is a big improvement. That and one dusty old brio makes for a cheap nas.
