I tried formatting a standard 1.44MB floppy disk in linux using the command:

$ fdformat /dev/fd0u1722

and I keep getting the error message "ioctl (FDFMTTRK): Invalid argument". I have tried this with many disks and I keep getting the same error message. Anyone have any ideas?

I had the same error. You probably tried formating the floppy in a virtual machine like vmware. That wont work!
