The NASLite-SMB floppy disk has 2 free sectors available. In order to accommodate ext3, kernel support needs to be compiled in as well as the appropriate e2fs utils.
There simply is no room on the floppy Disk.
NASLite was built by observing the lowest common denominator required to achieve the resultant functionality with a floppy being the target media.
Your point is very valid but will have to be adressed in a CD-based version.
