1) Am I to understand that the diffrent versions of NASlite only refer to their boot ability (cd-rom, floppy drive, and usb drive?)
Partly true, however, the floppy versions are a bit more targeted as compared to NASLite+ and NASLite+ for USB. Details on the floppy versions are available at the following URL:

2) The file system is ext2, correct? I've not mixed the linux systems with windows before, will I have any problem using it with NTFS based WinXP boxes? Specfically, will files and their attributes (MP3 tags) copy over with no problems?
NASLite can act as a file server for any OS regardless of it's local filesystem type. The only requirement is that a common networking protocol can be established. (MP3 tags are contained within the MP3 file itself)

3) Is there any way for the os to boot off of a harddisk or partition instead of a cdrom usbdrive or floppy?
There are some posts that explain possible approaches.

4) Only IDE drives are supported, correct?
NASLite v1 supports only 4 IDE drives.

5) I have seen vague refrences to free versions or trial versions made on the fourms. Where could I get ahold of one of these?
See the NASLite link above
