SANLite was Ralph's idea of about an year ago. That's what led to the remote storage option in NASLite-2. SANLite (great name - don't you think ;-)) is in the queue, will likely support both iSCSI and AoE and may be available later this year.

SANLite gets my vote! Bring on iSCSI and AoE.

Tony,

As long as it has been I'm guessing that this is a dead project. Is that the case?

Thanks

Still in the works.

Without getting too technical, the deprecation of DevFS in the 2.6 kernel has pushed us back in development.

Over the past few weeks I've experiemented with FreeNAS to see how it would compare to NASLite-2 and thought I would post my results here. I want to lead in by saying I do not like to "bash" so I'll try to keep this as factually acurate as possible.

I have two machines running NL2 and I tried the "Live CD" version of FreeNAS (config stored on USB) since this seemed like the easiest way to try things out.

Machine 1 - Booted up FreeNAS, configured things and all went quite well for about 5 minutes. Then the machine crashed and rebooted. Hmmm, maybe I got the config wrong. Rebooted FreeNAS, waited for all of the drives to go through fsck, double checked configuration. Machine came up and in about 5 minutes crashed and rebooted again. Tried the latest beta version of FreeNAS, same results. Posted a query on the FreeNAS boards and received no answers. Back to NL2 on machine 1.

Machine 2 - Booted up FreeNAS OK but then ran into a bunch of strange issues:

- Some folders just didn't appear in Windows Explorer (SSH'd into the machine and the files are all there). Checked config, permissions, users, groups, create masks, and everything else I could think of - nothing worked. I had a backup of the drive so I reformatted it from ext3 to ufs. After copying the files back everything appears but when you browse in Windows Explorer there is a 10 second delay before anything shows up. Theis delay caused all sorts of grief with my SageTV server.

- DeltaCopy reposts it can't change the timestamp on certain files. Checked everything I could think of again and still can't sort it out.

- System periodically crashes and reboots itself. Problem seems fairly random.

I posted several times on their forums and received very few responses.

I like the flexibility of FreeNAS but for me the thing is just too "fragile" to be trusted and there is little help to be found on their support boards.
