So, for two days now I've been working on getting NASLite working. I have a Pentium 120 that I figured would be perfect for this. It's a system that was running 95 in a corner for the wife (who wasn't using it). I plopped 2 160 gig drives in and boot up. First off, 192.168.1.1 is a bit of a poor choice of default IP addresses for an appliance that doesn't support network sharing of it's own; as that's the default address for most routers.
So fix IP, get both drives formatted and mounted. Start copying stuff on to 'em as a test (1,200kps seems to be the max speed I can get at full duplex 100). I left it copying last night and woke this morning to 6 columns of scrolling HEX #s on the NAS server. This has happened twice now.
Suggestions, comments... ?
