Hello Tim and Tony,

thanks for clarifying the EXT2/3 question. I will stay away from it then, and won't use the EXT3 formatted drive, and only use the EXT2 ones under NASLite.
(The only reason I even started dealing with Knoppix/ Linux was to be able to do the reformatting of the drive, as suggested by Tony, to check the secondary IDE, and to be able to create a floppy of the SMB version (a friend had created the initial SMBG for me). And since I had a spare HDD, I installed Knoppix to it, in order to have it there for maintenance, if needed, but really have no intentions to use it.
Ideally I want to stick only with NASLite, because I was impressed by the clever simplicity of use. I don't have extra time and brainroom to really familiarize myself with Linux - so I am glad to see that the CD Utility is out! Very smart solution!)

As to the SMBG issue and drives 3&4 not found on the secondary IDE:
To my knowledge, I have followed the instructions listed. One more thing I could try are the DMA allocations, which I am not familiar with what to do. But I am clueless, what I should be aiming for in the Phoenix BIOS, especially, since all drives work find under Knoppix Linux.
If possible, pls advise.

But maybe the problem does originate with some small glitch in NASLite, as Chang suggest?

Regards, Thorsten

This has really got me baffled...

I assume that you are using the 80-conductor IDE/ATA cable for those drives when you try and run them via the G version.

Chang, do you have the same IDE controller as Thorsten - PIIX4 controller?
Is anyone else using drives on a secondary IDE with a PIIX4 controller or are all cases the same?

PIIX4 support may have to default to generic if the optimized version is broken. I guess another G release may be in order.

Tony,

yes I am using high quality 80 conductor IDE/ATA cables.

Kind Regards, Thorsten

My NASlite machine is a micron P1-200mmx with 128mb ram.
Intel chipset and using regular 40 pin cables, with 4 x maxtor 80gig drives.
When using the G -nic, the system logs do report all the drives right up untill the ramdisk loading & nas software engages. Then ide2 drives are not available.

Hi Chang,

Can you post the chipset your micron board is using?

Check in the SYS Log Info page. It would read something like this:
Sep 23 02:04:06 NAS user.info klogd: PIIX4: IDE controller at PCI slot 00:07.1

Thanks.

I started to make the logs, then somehow one of the drives got messed up switching back and forth between 100 & 1000 NIC cards. So i'm doing a low level format.
Anyway the logs might be too big to post as a text message. Can we upload attachments as zip file here?

Hi Chang,

You don't have to post the entire logs. Simply check for the type of IDE controller that the kernel identifies and post only that.

I have the same problem, but came about it in a slightly different way.

I have two identical Maxtor 250GB DiamondMax Ultra ATA/133 drives (Maxtor 6Y250P0) in an older Dell Pentium II 400 MHz case. Both were purchased new from Costco this week. The Costco retail kit comes with a free Serial ATA PCI Card, so I first tried to connect both drives to the card, but NAS-Lite SMB saw neither. So I read the manual  and reconfigured both connecting to IDE0 and IDE1 as master drives with the supplied cables. (Note to others--these drives are shipped with the jumpers set to cable select, and NASLite won't recognize them that way. I suggest the PDF manuals have a note about master/slave/cableselect added--took me a while to figure out that CS is not acceptable as a setting for NASlite.)

Anyway, once I set each as a master, NASLite-SMB was happy. It formatted both without a problem (as disk1 and disk3). I was a bit unhappy with the transfer rates and ordered an Intel 82540EM 10/100/1000 LAN Adapter (which is one of the brands you list as supported in the SMB-G manual).

BUT when I startup using NASLite-SMBG, only Disk1 is working; Disk3 is recognized as being installed but not formatted for NASLite. When I tell the program to configure it, it then says it can't find Disk3. This is exactly what the person who started this thread reports.

Here's the Disk3 report:

To summarize, Drive 3 was configured and is seen and is working with SMB--but it is not seen as configured and is unable to be configured by SMBG.
