OK... I just set up a NASLite server using an old IBM and some hard drives cannibalized off of various machines. Right now I only have two drives. One of them has SMART built in, and reports as healthy in the NASLite server HTML pages. The other disk reports no on-board SMART. But I'm still getting the three-high, three-low beeps that are supposed to signify a SMART failure! From the non-SMART Disk-1:

Code:
=== START OF INFORMATION SECTION ===
Device Model:     IBM-DJAA-31700
Serial Number:    1P05P126280
Firmware Version: P0IRA73A
ATA Version is:   1
ATA Standard is:  Unrecognized. Minor revision code: 0x00
SMART is only available in ATA Version 3 Revision 3 or greater.
We will try to proceed in spite of this.
SMART support is: Unavailable - device lacks SMART capability.
A mandatory SMART command has failed: exiting. To continue, turn on the -P option

From the SMART Disk-2:

Code:
=== START OF INFORMATION SECTION ===
Device Model:     ST32520A

ATA Standard is:  ATA/ATAPI-4 X3T13 1153D revision 6
SMART support is: Available - device has SMART capability.
SMART support is: Enabled

Warning: device does not support Self Test Logging

Is there something I need to know that will cool it on the beeps? It's driving my wife bonkers. :o I'm wondering if my Disk-1 is firing off the beeps for some reason... is there a way to hack the floppy so that it doesn't beep any more for that drive? I don't need Chicken Little warning me about the sky every five minutes, but a warning if Drive-2 decides to flake out might be nice.

I had the same problem. My understanding is that the beeping cannot be disabled through the NASLite software. So, I disconnected the speaker connected to the motherboard. Actually, the speaker is integrated into the motherboard, but thankgoodness there was a speaker jumper that I removed and eliminated the beeping. This might not be the most elegant solution, but it worked. I am interested in hearing about other ways to eliminate the beeping for non-SMART hard drives.

In an earlier post, Tony had promised a menu option to turn off SMART support in future versions. As of now, pulling the speaker is the only option.

I have a non-SMART capable hard drive attached and NAS-Lite doesn't beep. The only difference is, I have a SMART capable hard drive as Drive 1.

I'm assuming that if you have a SMART drive as drive 1 NAS-Lite won't beep on other drives that aren't SMART attached.

I'm using NAS-Lite FTP v1. On a P133 Dell Dimension with 48MB of RAM.
