First of all, thanx for this wonderful product.

I used it previously with a 100 Mbit/s NIC from 3Com without any problems. I decided to upgrade my NAS with a 1000 Mbit/s NIC. After reading the manual of NASLite-SMB(G) I bought the Intel PRO/1000 NIC.

And now it does not work any more :(

In the startup sequence the following (network-related) messages appeared:

---
Code:
   ...
   Intel (R) PRO/1000 Network Driver - version 5.2.30.1-k1
   Copyright (c) 1999-2004 Intel Corporation.
   ns83820.c: National Semiconductor DP83820 10/100/1000 driver.
   sk98lin: No adapter found
   ...
   ...
   ...
   Server - Launching Services
ifconfig: eth0: error fetching interface information: Device not found

   Server - Network Error
ifconfig: eth0: error fetching interface information: Device not found
   ...

---

I have the idea my network card is not supported?

Who can help me out?

Regards,

Luc

Hello,

It seems that kernel 2.4.26 used in NASLite does not support the Intel Pro/1000 GT Desktop Adapter as can be seen in the help from the kernel configuration...

My suggestion is to update documentation of NASLite to warn for unsupported Intel PRO/1000 adapters. :(

Or can somebody offer a solution (other then buying a new NIC)?
Secondly, is this specific NIC supported in NASLite+?

Kind regards,

Luc

Hi Luc,

Are there any other NICs on that machine. On-board NICs are common, so make sure that if there are any onboard NICs they are properly disabled via jumpers or BIOS.

-------------------------

If someone is using an Intel PRO/1000 with NASLite, can you please post the model, etc. and if you are having any problems or issues with it.

Thanks.

I have an Intel PRO/1000 (Intel(R) PRO/1000 Network Driver - version 5.2.52-k3) working with NASLite 1.5. I've had the same controller since NASLite 1.2 without any problems. As Tony mentioned, my on board NIC is disabled via the BIOS and NASLite easily found this card.

Part of my System info is printed below:

FYI,

My motherboard does not have a NIC onboard so disabling it is not an issue.

Furthermore, the Gb NIC seems to work:
    it works on another (Windows XP) machine;
on the NAS machine the NIC does search for an IP-address via DHCP (if this has been set on the NIC) before booting the NASLite floppy. From this I conclude that my motherboard supports my Gb NIC.

I tried to walk through chosen kernel configuration for SMBG as given in the NASLite-SRC. I did this with 'make menuconfig'. For the selected networkdevices I checked the help button. In the help for the Intel Pro/1000 the different supported models are listed. My Pro/1000 GT is not listed in there...

I am all ears :?

Luc

My Pro/1000 is an MT model. Don't know if that's the reason why mine works and yours doesn't :(
Also, check your cable. Might cause your card to fail (it shouldn't, but who knows).

NASLite supports the entire array of 100/1000 PCI NICs handled by the standard Linux 2.4.26 source. Are you suggesting that we publish a “Hardware Not Supported by NASLite” reference? If so, do you realize the magnitude of your request?

I think that it is reasonable to expect a list of supported hardware. For that, take a look at the manual.

I think you answered the question about how to find out what NIC cards NASLite supports. Just point users to a reliable web site that has the list of NIC cards Linux 2.4.26 supports and they'll have their answer 8).

That was the original intent, but then we added the list of chipsets to the manual. There will always be an obscure set of unsupported items that may not be explicitly noted. That’s what this forum is all about. Out of all the folks running NASlite on machines of various flavors and vintage, nessnaj is the first to note the GT incompatibility. I don’t know about you, but I have to consider that an exception and not the norm.

Hello Tony,

Of course I do not suggest to have an "Hardware Not Supported by NASLite" reference, because that would not help any. We all want to see the hardware that IS supported. This list is mentioned in the manual (in my case NASLite-SMB) on page 3. However, according to my opinion this list is not accurate:

It states that for the Gigabit network cards that among others the Intel PRO/1000 is supported. As we can see from posts from other users this is valid for e.g. Intel PRO/1000 MT, but NOT for Intel PRO/1000 GT, i.e. not all Intel PRO/1000 cards are supported. Therefore the list mentioned on page 3 in not entirely correct: indirectly it includes "Hardware Not Supported by NASLite".

My suggestion was to warn users that the growing variety of Intel PRO/1000 cards can lead to the situation that people buy such a card and despite described in the manual it wil not work due to a chipset on the card which is not supported by kernel 2.4.26 (probably the chipset did not even exist on date of release of the kernel which is april 2004).

I myself was the "victim" of RTFM by deciding to buy an Intel PRO/1000 card, not knowing that the GT version does not work  .

I agree with sanmaster to refer to a website pointing to the entire range of 1000 PCI NICs handled by the standard Linux kernel 2.4.26 source. In the mean time I will find another card...

Regards,

Luc

I´m so happy that I´d tried out the free NASlite-SMBG-Floppy, before I would had bought the +version.

I had looked to the documentation which NIC is supported and decided to buy the possible best card : Intel Pro/1000

- thought and done :
...booting...
Server error ! (same errorcode)

Mentioned that this card...
INTEL(R) PRO/1000 GT DESKTOP ADAPTER
PWLA8391GTBLK
... is now the only "Intel Gigabit-card for PCI" you can get in stores in my neighbourhoud you must say that the NICs Intel Pro/1000 IS NOT SUPPORTED.

So the statment "Intel... ...supported" is a lie !

You must consider what kind of "Intel Pro/1000" are the acutally (current) cards (available in stores) !

Don't know if you are adverse to buying online but this Intel card from zipzoomfly.com works with NASLite+:

Hope that helps!

On the Intel-Site itself only the GT/PT-card is listed for PCI.
http://www.intel.com/network/connectivi ... apters.htm

There I can see MT-cards for PCI-X (Server), not for PCI (Desktop).

So the german-stores presents also PCI-X-cards :
http://www.idealo.de/preisvergleich/Off ... 58277.html

Maybe its old and zipzoomfly.com has a rest of MT-PCI-cards ?!

And/But the interface on that picture does not look like PCI, too !

OK, I´ve found a PCI-variant of the MT-card and a german reseller who is able to send me the NIC.
