Hi there,
First of all, let me just say what a great product this is. By using it, I've managed to salvage an PII 400 that was just collecting dust and some smaller (albeit a bit whiney) hard drives to do backups and store vidcap files. Keep up the great work!

One thing that I've noticed however, is that while my transfer rates between my Win98SE desktop and the NASlite box are decent (~13Mbps), the same cannot be said for my WinXP pro laptop transfers to/from the NAS. I haven't measured it using an upload/download monitor but the same file takes at least 2-3 times (perhaps even longer) the amount of time using the laptop as compared with the desktop to the NAS. Transfer rates of shared files btwn the desktop and laptop have been good even before the NASlite was added to my setup. I'm using a Linksys WRT54G as a router.
Does anyone know why this is occurring and how it can be fixed? Has anyone else encountered this problem?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Other details:
Laptop
WinXP Pro sp1
Centrino 1.5 GHz
NIC: integrated using a Broadcom 440x chipset

Desktop
Win98SE
Celeron 800 MHz
NIC: SMC 1211Tx

NAS
NASlite-SMB
PII 400 MHz
128Mb
2x40GB (Seagate & Maxtor)
1x 6 GB (WD)
NIC: 3Com 905B-TX (I think this uses a Broadcom chipset too)

latest drivers (at least for the age of the equipment)
Both computers use ZoneAlarm (built-in XP firewall has been disabled)

Thanks,
Dennis

Hi there,

Thought I'd post my solution just in case anyone was curious.
After trying a couple of things on the laptop, I noticed that the duplex mode and speed on the NIC were set to 100Mbps/full duplex.
After changing it to auto mode - the slow transfer rates disappeared.

Interesting problem/solution to me even if it's obvious to others. It still appears that I'm connecting at 100Mbps/full duplex so I'm not sure as to why the change to auto was necessary to boost transfer rates.

Anyone care to comment?

Dennis
