Hello,
I am "mentally" setting up NASLite-SMB, and anticipate using three HDDs.
1. for some files that need to be centrally available to the network
2.+3. Two drives that will backup targets. They will be mounted in a removable rack, so they can be changed and rotated (after shutdown; to a safe location off-site)

What happens then in the following scenarios:
A. If in Drivebay 2. and 3. are "new"/ different drives, and they are unformatted (at first)
B. A. If in Drivebay 2. and 3. are "new"/ different drives, and they have already been formatted by NASLite
C. If a fourth drive is added at some point

Will drive Nr.1 always remain intact and untouched by any pursuant formatting operation?
Will there be any "bad things" happening, if one of the two drives meant for backup are not in place?
Will NASLite format (only) the drives in case A.?

I have studied the pdf instructional (p. 4), but could not find the information needed.

Could someone knowledgeable clarify?

Thanks in advance, Thorsten

Hi Thorsten,

When you select the "Configure Storage Disks" option, NASLite does not blindly format all disks. It asks you which one (1,2,3 or 4), and then asks for a confimation. In other words, you can select which drive you wish to format without affecting the other drives.

In addition, since NASLite essentially reconfigures the system on reboot, swapping drives will not cause any problems whatsoever as long as the actual swapping is done in the power-off state (common sense here  )

That out of the way, i don't see any problem with what you are planning to do in all 3 of your scenarios.

Hope this answers your question.
