Sunday evening, the lights BLOCKED_WORD out for a second or so, and my NAS-Lite server rebooted. Afterwards I discovered that the first drive was coming up unmounted. I have rebooted (from telnet) the machine umpteen times, to cause it to recheck the drive, in hopes it would fix itself, but it still comes up unmounted. The second drive comes up fine.

Code:

My problem seems to be similar to the problem described here:

http://www.serverelements.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=634&highlight=power+failure&sid=aac823a161021df760abe85ce1554cf1

I have moved the drives temporarily to another machine, which I can boot into Knoppix (vesrion 3.7 of the Live-CD), but when I try to invoke "cfdisk /dev/hda" or "cfdisk /dev/hda1" from the Console, I get either No Such Device, or it complains that the drive is read only. (The IDE cable on that machine has only one connector on it, so I've got just Drive-1 attached.)

Knoppix identifies the drive (and places an icon for it on the desktop), and lists it as /mnt/hda1, and I can browse the contents without difficulty... but when I reinsert the drives into my NAS machine, the first drive still comes up as Unmountable.

On the other machine, if I invoke "cfdisk W /dev/hda1" or for that matter "cfdisk /dev/hda1 W" it displays at me basic Usage: instructions, but clearly doesn't do what the above BLOCKED_WORD message said it was supposed to do (read and write back out the drive structure). I want to restore whatever directory structure might be messed up on the drive, so that NAS-lite will mount the drive again.

If I typed "cfdisk /dev/hda1" I get:

"Opened disk read-only - you have no permission to write"

and then

"FATAL ERROR: Cannot read disk drive" and "press any key to exit cfdisk"

Am I missing something?

What can I do to fix this? I have also downloaded the "S.M.A.R.T. Linux" floppy image and written it to a disk, but I am clearly in over my head trying to figure out what to do with that. I am a complete Linux noob.

Okay, I used the RIPLinux (Recovery Is Possible) cd on the disk, which was mentioned in another thread. After logging into it, I selected the first option on the opening menu, and then from console I invoked "e2fsck -t /dev/hda1" and it fixed the drive.

I have now reinstalled the two drives into the machine I'm using for the NAS and can now access Disk-1 again without trouble.

I thank all those on this site that have pointed us to the various solutions.

(And in case anyone's wondering why I didn't just boot from CD on the machine I'm using for the NAS server: This particular machine will not successfully boot from CD with 99% of the Linux CDs I have tried on it, even with boot-from-floppy-and-then-hand-off-control-to-the-CD disks. This is something which has caused me no end of hastle in the past.)
