Hi,

I tried different ways to create a boot disc (without success):

1. Creating with a new linux distribution (Suse 9.2)
- getting errors on format (verify errors) mostly on track 81
I tried different new HighDensity discs - everytime the same
- One time I had success formating the disc and moving the image on the
disc but on boot the same as in thread:
http://www.serverelements.com/phpBB2/vi ... 651803a474

2. with rawwrite under Windows
- creating the disc works, booting also but after starting the kernel and scanning for hardware he tries to access the disc again the I get an I/O error. See Thread:

http://www.serverelements.com/phpBB2/vi ... 651803a474

Hope on help

Thanks

Alex

The only things that i can think of are a dirty floopy drive or a floppy drive that can't handle the 1.72M format.

There is a small number of drives out there that have had problems with the 1.72 format. Not much can be done about that.

My advice is to try making and booting the flooppy on another machine and see if the different hardware does the job.

Thanks Tony,

I tried it on two different win pcs and on two linux pcs.
But I'll have a try on another machine.

Thanks

Meanwhile I tried on three different Linux PCs, two of them with new DiscDrifves. Each time I get Verify Errors on formating the disc.

At least then I started one pc with knoppix Linux and it worked, I don't know why but now I can use this great tool.

Thanks

Alex

It seems that is not only depending on the OS.
I created sucessfully one disc and tried it in another pc with an older floppy drive (2 years). There I get errors on boot. On the PC where I created it, it works perfectly.
Some of my bad tries where on Pcs with new floppy drives - strange.
Maybe it depends also on the manufacturer.

Alex,

You'll find that not all floppy drives will read or write the 1722 format, just as all floppy disks are not able to be written to in that format.

Start with good floppies - Sony, Maxwell, or Memorex - and if you can't get the floppy formated on a particular machine, you may have a less than optimal drive. Some of the newer drives aren't really up to specs, so there again you may need to buy a good floppy drive. My Mitsumi's seem ok, but I've had other problems with them that I don't have with the Teac.

Hope this helps.

Tim
