I need a virtual NAS for small size dynamic files shared among a network, intended as backup of a phisical NAS.
I made some tests building several virtual machine with the same configuration.

512 Mb Ram, Memory page trimming disabled, 4Gb Virtual HD preallocated under WmWare workstation 7.1.3 .

I tested :
1) FreeNas 8.0 RC3 64 bit
2) Windows 2003 Server Enterprise edition (with only file server running as rule)
3) NanoNAS 2.01
4) NASLite-SMB (no gigabit ethernet).

I transferred 4784 files (approx.320 Mb) among a gigabit network (only Win2003 detected the gigabit connection) with these results:

FreeNAS : 2:32s
NanoNAS : 2:07s
Win2003 : 1:37s
NASLite-SMB : 1:24s !!!

I'ts a strange world ;)
