Hi,

I've got Naslite working just fine but as it is on a very old 486 machine I thought I would try it out on a slightly newer machine to see if that made things any faster. I tried this out with my normal Naslite boot floppy (that works ok on the slower machine) but I get a "not a valid boot disk" message on the newer machine. The machine is trying to boot off the floppy drive.

To make sure, I tried booting the new machine off a Win98 boot floppy and it boots ok.

Any ideas?

Pull the floppy drive from the older machine and install it in the newer machine. It might make the problem go away and allow the thing to boot.

Hi Mike - Thanks for the reply. I'll try that but I'm puzzled. Why do you thing that changing the drive might fix it? I concluded that the drive on the newer machine is ok as it will boot the newer machine ok using a Win98 boot floppy.

Cheers

Could it be that your boot settings have HDD before Floppy? It will find an ext3 partition first and be unable to boot from it.

Try what Mike suggested.

Explanation: The heads on the old floppy drive may have a different alignment than the ones on the new one. Thus if you could try to match the old floppy with the old disk (which we know it likes) ... You could also test the reverse (but it won't solve anything): try the Win98 floppy on the old drive.

In order to use the new floppy drive you might try formatting a new floppy in the new drive.

Thanks to all for the helpfull suggestions. The problem turned out to be what I suspect is a component part of Intel Boot Manager in the BIOS. This option forced the system to look at the MBR of the boot floppy. This is why it would boot from a Windows floppy but not from a NASLite floppy. Disabled that and all is fine.
