For some reasons I could not format the floppy disk. So far, I've tried Knoppix and Ubuntu LiveCD, but both returned the same error message: something like:
knoppix@Knoppix:~$ fdformat /dev/fd0u1722
/dev/fd0u1722: no such file or directory".

It should be noted that when I ran the first command line "gunzip Naslite-ftp-v1.1.img.gz , I got a similar error message, then I had to enter the whole path to the file, which was something like /home/ubuntu/Desktop/Naslite-ftp-v1.1.img.gz and that seemed to work, as the .gz file was then changed to .img file.

Another note was that if I enter command like: fdformat /dev/fd0, then the floppy will be formated, but only to 1.44MB. Adding anything after /dev/fd0 will result in the same error message: no such file or directory.

So far, I've tried to format using 2 liveCDs (Knoppix and Ubutu) running on 2 different computers, and at least 4 different floppy disks (new and old disks) and have always get the same error message. Please help... This is my first time playing with *nux and it's a bit frustrating. Thank in advance for any inputs.

Finally I made it. Below is exactly what I did:

* Boot from Knoppix 3.6 LiveCD. Earlier, I used the latest available Knoppix LiveCD version 5.1 and it couldn't format my floopy disk as mentioned in my previous post. Downloaded an older version (v.3.6) and everything worked out fine.

* Within Knoppix, access the internet, download the image file from Server Elements called NASLite-FTP-v1.1.img.gz. Save this file on the Desktop when being asked.

* Click on the Terminal (an icon looks like a TV)

* At the prompt, enter the following commands one at a time:

cd Desktop
gunzip NASLite-FTP-v1.1.img.gz
fdformat /dev/fd0u1722
dd if=NASLite-FTP-v1.1.img of=/dev/fd0u1722

* The first command was to change directory to Desktop, where the image was saved. The second one was to unzip the image. When running this command, the .gz file on the Desktop will change to .img file. The third command was to format the floppy disk, and of course, the disk has to be inserted into the floppy drive before running this command. This step took approx. 2.5 minutes. The last command was to copy the unzipped image to the floppy disk. This took approx. 75 seconds.

As you can see, I am a totally Linus newbie and was exited when I can make my first boot disk in Linux. I really hope that this will help someone like me to create their first boot disk.

Thanks ... nice helpful HOW-TO for noobies.

I also had trouble finding it just now ... but then ran across this: (have not tried to see if it actually works ... post back if it's successful):

http://archive.cs.stedwards.edu/knoppix/

and

http://www.livedistro.org/release-announcements/gnu/linux-releases/sfs-knoppix-v3-6-20041115
(Not sure how that's supposed to work ... but interesting concept).

(Edit: 1st link was unsuccessful ... I updated it)
(2nd Edit: the download from "//archive.cs.stedwards.edu/knoppix/" crawls along like molasses; I am now downloading from http://www.tech-geeks.org/servers/knoppix/)
