Thanks for the reply; the switches are brand-new and highly recommended. I will check the cabling tho; I may in fact run another line from the 2nd floor to the basement. Will also try direct connecting via crossover to see if that changes anything.

I think the installation of the NAS server may just have exposed existing weaknesses in my network. I haven't regularly needed to move 5-10GB tar files around but I have recently been reminded of how important backups are (didn't lose anything, thank goodness). I found the NAS reference on sourceforge because I really didn't want to have to administer yet another server (Samba to join my email and web and db) and NASlite seemed blissfully (and at $25, cheaply) zero-admin.

So, if you say you've got the same server I'm going to assume it's in my infrastructure. I'll test as I said and post back here with results. Again, thanks for the patient replies, I hope my results give you some useful feedback.
