I have set up an NASLite-SMB server on my home network. From my WIndows XP PC I can telnet into the server and can browse the server html pages with Firefox. SO, the server is definitely working.

The problem is that I cannot see the disks on the server to map them as network drives. Windows can see the server itself but no drives are visble to be mapped.

Any ideas about what is wrong?

Many thanks,

Raymond

Have you formated the drives using NASLite?

Post the contents of your Server, System and SYS Log Info pages. That should shed some light on what is the state of your system.

Everything appears normal so the problem is likely with the client machine. This can often be caused by cached credentials on the windows client.

you can still access the drives using \\yourip\Disk-2

Thanks for checking the logs etc.

Trying to connect to \\10.0.0.10\Disk-2 did not work either.

1. How are you accessing the Info pages?
2. Can you connect to other computers via that client?
3. Do you see any errors in the SMB Log or NMB Log pages?
4. Can you connect to the NASLite server from another client?

I can access the info pages from the XP machine using either IE or Firefox.

Quote:
2. Can you connect to other computers via that client?

I do not have any other clients on my home network to test this.

Quote:
3. Do you see any errors in the SMB Log or NMB Log pages?

No, there are no errors.

Quote:
4. Can you connect to the NASLite server from another client?

Yes, I can connect without problems from a SuSE 10.0 Linux client.

This suggests that the problem is at the Windows XP end. I was able to successfully ping the NASLite server from the XP machine. I also tried disabling Zone Alarm, but that made no difference.

I have also checked that IP number assigned to the NASLite server is NOT in use by any other client on the network.

Over the months, there have been threads in different NAS forums about this type of problem, but I have not been able to figure out what the common issue is.

Does anybody else have any ideas?

Many thanks.

I know that it is considered to be "bad form" to follow up your own queries, but...

I have finally figured out what the problem was. Zone Alarm (Free Version) was blocking the netbios ports necessary for the NASLIte server to be seen from the Windows XP machine. Completely disabling Zone Alarm allowed things to work. The Windows Firewall does NOT block the netbios ports and so it worked with Windows Firewall.

Just to be safe, I have now installed the trial version of Zone Alarm Anti-spyware which provides the same firewall as Zone Alarm Pro for less money.

Things are now working fine with Zone Alarm Anti-spyware and I feel safer than with just Windows Firewall.

Hello leicray:

You can continue to use the (free) Zone Alarm. I use it. All you have to do is add the IP address of your NASLite to the TRUSTED ZONE, and keep the (excellent) protection afforded by ZA up and running.

(Double-click on ZA system-tray icon. Choose "Firewall", select the "Zones" tab (in upper right), in lower-right click on "Add>>" and "IP Address", then fill the fields with the proper info.)

:) Georg

Thanks for the info Georg.

I have now uninstalled the trial version of Zone Alarm Anti-spyware and reverted to the free version. I just added the IP Address, as you suggested, and everything is working fine. :D
