Noticed something strange on my NASLite server which I set up over the weekend. When I look at a file's properties in windows, it's size on disk is a minimum of 4 MB, and increases in 4MB increments. Of course, this means that really small files are taking up a ton of space (not good).

Clearly this is related to cluster size on the NASLite disks, which seems to be 4 MB (pretty darn big clusters!)

However, as it turns out, this isn't as bad as I'd first thought. If I checked the properties of all folders on my drive and added it up, the total size was about 90 GB but the "size on disk" was 197 GB. Whoa. The kicker: the drive is only 160 GB to begin with! And if I look at the drive properties, I see that it still reports about 60 GB free.

So, even though NASLite reports "size on disk", it clearly is incorrect and can be ignored. So, no big deal.

I'd love to see a full explanation of all this.

P.S. Tony, awesome software!

The explanation is rather simple. I think up to 2.2.5, samba wasn't calculating this value correctly. It is most definitely cluster size related. It is an incorrect value and has no effect on proper drive usage.

Anyway, since NASLite uses samba 2.0.10, that will have to be one of those annoying things that we'll just have to overlook ;-)

That's what I figured. Consider it overlooked! 8)

Heh. This worried me for a while too, but after I reached 28gb on a 23gb drive with 14gb still free, I realized it was nothing to worry about. lol
